coping with chemo

i am starting chemo on thursday does anyone have any advice about help through it i am dreading it.

  • Hello mumto5,

Good luck with your treatment.  You might want to be more specific with your question as there are many different types of chemo for many different cancers and there is likely to be someone on here who has been through what you are going through and knows what the likely side effects with be with particular types.  But as a general rule, I guess looking after yourself, taking it easy - resting when you need to rest and exercising where you are able is a good rule of them.

  • Hi

When my husband had chemo it was a long day (6 hr infusion) so if you on a chemo ward you may want to take good book/magazine and probably some snacking food.  Everyone is different in theiir reaction so difficult to be specific as to how you might feel.Best to think you will be fine. All the best.Jules

  • thank you for sharing your husbands experience i feel better now i think it is just fear of the unknown you hear that many stories but i understand everybody is different and everyone has their own cancer story it is just so scary and overwhelming when you find out you have cancer but i am going to be positive and beat it,

  • Hi Mumto5,

Sorry to read your story but I just love your positive attitude when you say you will beat it. That what I told everyone when over two years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I started with a high PSA count but it is now the lowest they can measure. So take heart from my story.

Please take care, best wishes Brian.

  • thanks for your reply i am glad you are fine now it makes me feel better knowing i can get through this,

    takecare,

  • Hi Mumto5

Just wanted to wish you all the best for Thursday and hope your chemo goes well. I would also like to congratulate you for replying to others on here. I think this site is like most things in life; you get out of it what you put into it. Your responses have been good so I say thank you for participating and please keep on doing what your doing.

    Best wishes, Brian

  • thank you i will try to help people if i can because we all know it is very hard what hits us in life but somehow we always get the strength, you also make great comments and i can see you help a lot of people.

    take care,

    susan.

  • Hi Susan

Just wanted to say good luck with you first chemo on Thursday. My first chemo was on Xmas eve and I was dreading it but the minute I stepped through the door everyone made me feel so welcome. I'm sure you will make lots of new friends. I have!

Try not to worry too much about side effects I know you will because I did too but everyone is different. I just said to myself. Take it as it comes. One day at a time. You sound a very positive person and that will definitely help you.

    Take care Sharon xxx

  • Hi Susan

Just in case I dont get on later, just wanted to wish you all the best for the start of your treatment tomorrow. Forgot to say if you have questions now (sure there are many) write them down to take  with you. Good luck and keep up that wonderful attitude = it will help you cope with your change of routine. Hope you have good support from the wonderful large family around you. Best wishes Jules
