Secondary Bone Cancer

Hi I have been diagnosed with secondary bone cancer in the upper part of the thigh bone. My oncologist said he wanted a hip relacement although some surgeons wait until the thigh bone breaks. He thought this was rather cruel and I agreed as I was in a lot of pain. I was told that I would have an appointment within the 2 week period as set by NHS guidlines. My breast care nurse said I would probably have to wait until the bone fractured. However I got an appointment within 3 weeks. I think this is because persistence on my part. At the moment I am not sure what to expect. I have checked the internet and am ready to give up on myself. I feel that I am being really selfish. Just feel at the end of my tether.

  • Hi dindin

Why are you ready to give up on yourself and why are you feeling selfish?

  • Hi Dindin

My cancer was in the bones among other places and now they cannot find it on the scans.I hope this does not come across as to annoying .I just throught that i would type because i also looked through the internet when they told me it had spread and felt disparing-how could you not but things have gone better than i hoped. It is not always a steady downward path.

It is great that you have  good doctor and there is someting that can be done .Are you on biophosphates(for strengthing the bones)

Have you looked on the inspire site-the branch for advanced breast cancer.Sadly they do not have the magic answer but they are all dealing with the same things and it is also a good place for comparing notes on new treatments.Dealing with pain is so wearing .You need to have good things to look to as well as the hospital monsters

  • Hi Geri,

thank you for replying to my post. I was having a bad day and reflecting on the treatment I have already been through for breast cancer. The pain was very bad and painkillers either did not work or laid me flat (opiates). I had just been to see the GP who gave me Fentanyl patches which have just started to kick in today. I was very positive during the treatment for breast cancer which only finished late last year. I just felt like I had no strength mentally to continue. This is not usually me and now I feel like things are just spinning out of control. Maybe after I have seen the orthopaedic surgeon and know what to expect I can get back to how I usually am. Thanks again Linda

  • Hi grumpy,

thank you for replying. I totally understand what you are saying. I think looking things up on the net whist in pain did not help me. I hope things continue to be more positive for you. What are biophosphates? I am on calcichew because I take letrozole but I was told it is just vitamin D and calcium. I was told by the breast care nurse that I would be on 3 medications but I cannot remember what she said. I know what you mean about the hospital monster, it has been my life since June 2010 although I have managed to have a couple of holidays during that time. The thing now is that Is the pain which did not seem to be a problem before. The Fentanyl patches I got from the GP seem to be working today, just hope it continues. Linda

  • Hi Linda

I am so sorry to hear about how bad your pain is - I'm hoping it has improved

My Dad was on Fentanyl Patches also and he found great relief from them

I can't imagine what you have being going through with your treatment. Everyone is entitled to a bad few days I reckon..you are only human

It sounds that your oncologist is very pro active though which is great

Best of luck with your surgeon let us know how you get on

  • Hi Dindin

I hope you are OK. I'm recovering from a hip replacement for hip cancer. I had it a week ago on Monday- was discharged on Saturday.

Please don't feel bad ( I know you were at the end of your tether !) .  My orthopaedic team at Charring Cross hospital London were amazing to me. So kind and caring. I was lucky. To be honest by the time I was diagnosed and on MST the worst of my pain was gone so I had my op & wasn't in much pain. The just didn't want it to break. It was weird having the op but at least I have a healthy hip. He removed some tumour and I will be having radiotherapy .

Myou breast nurse said to go for it- they want me to have a good quality of life , ie , they haven't given up on me.

I'mI'm recovering well- walking well on crutches. You definitely need help on discharge as there are restrictions to bending . Best piece of equipment I ever bought was something called a helping hand from argos. It helps you puck things up from the floor.  I got it when my back was very painful ( spine mets too) - it was £10 .

Please do get in touch if you want to ask me anything.  I really feel for you  . My initial breast cancer was 2013 and came back mid 2016 - you haven't had ant reprieve.

    Best wishes & love
