Travel insurance with Prostate cancer

I have held an annual travel insurance policy with Aviva organised through my Barclays Bank account. It costs £14:50 a month to cover me and my wife. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer locally advanced in July and we had already booked a holiday to India for November. I notified Aviva of my diagnosis but they would not cover me for any cancer-related claims, but are happy to continue the cover as per usual. I can’t envisage any cancer related treatment I may need on holiday and the holiday is highly unlikely to be cancelled due to cancer treatment.  I’m on hormone drugs at present and due to start radiotherapy in December. My question is, ‘Is it necessary to pay a small fortune for holiday insurance if I’m ok with not being covered for cancer-related claims?”

  • Hi DickyDB and welcome to the Cancer Chat community.

I'm sorry to hear you were diagnosed with prostate cancer in July and that Aviva won't cover any cancer related claims through your annual travel insurance policy now that your circumstances have changed.

We have some information about getting travel insurance on our website, but it may be worth getting in touch with Macmillan about this as they have financial advisers that will be able to advise you further.

So many of our members know how tough it is to get affordable travel insurance when heading off on holiday, so you are not alone, and hopefully some of them will stop by soon to share their experiences and advice.

I hope you're able to come to a decision about this soon and that you and your wife have a wonderful time in India.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator
