Critical Illness Claim - Breast Cancer

Hi, after several stressful months, I am now in a position to begin to tackle all of the outstanding admin tasks that come with a breast cancer diagnosis. My wife was diagnosed initially with DCIS and underwent surgery for a full left Mastectomy. She is now recovered and coping really well, but when the results came in post operation, it was High Grade DCIS (65mm) and also a 2mm section of Grade 2 invasive cancer. I have begun the process of a critical illness claim and was wondering if anyone has experience of this and anything to be aware of. Not sure if the policy will be a full pay-out or a part pay-out but I am thinking that the invasive element may change the outcome. Any advice/experience in this are would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hi James and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry to hear your wife was diagnosed with breast cancer - this must have been very difficult for you both - but I'm glad to hear she's had surgery and her recovery is going well.

I hope some of our members will share their experiences and advice with you soon but if you haven't done so already, it may be worth getting in touch with Macmillan as they have financial advisers you can discuss this with. I'm sure they will be more than happy to answer your questions and help you with this claim, so do give them a call when you can.

    Kind regards,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  •    I was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma Breast Cancer mid January had right side mastectomy and axillary lymph node clearance.  I submitted my Critical Illness claim straight away and it was paid out within 6 weeks.  My policy was a decreasing policy and it clearly showed ne in the paperwork how much it was worth at that particular time.  Good luck with your claim.

  • Hi   thank you for your reply and sorry to hear you have had to go through that. Hope you have recovered well. Would you mind me asking who your insurance provider is please. Again, thank you for the response.

  •   my policy was with Halifax as it had originally been an add on to my mortgage.  It was a really smooth process.  I had a telephone interview with them before they sent out the claim form, I attached copies of all my medical letters and provided details they asked for.

I didn't have any problems at all.  Wishing you all the best.

  •    thank you for the info, it's really helpful. I've started the process this week and had the telephone interview. The form was then emailed and have sent these all back. I'm with Zurich so I'm hoping it should also be straightforward. Thanks again for the information, much appreciated.
