Benefits

Hi all, my Dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer which has spread to his lungs  this was after I took him into A&E as his blood sugars were 28. After scans the news was broken to myself and my mom which knocked us for six. All of this happened in the last 10 days and yesterday we were told nothing can be done for him apart from palliative care now and he has been given a few months f life left. We are hoping to get him home late next week-hoping that someone is in a similar situation as we don’t know what to expect in help how much it’ll cost and is there anything that they can claim. I live a couple of hours from them but will visit daily or as much as I can to help out. But I realise the time will come that we will need to transfer him to a hospice.

my mom is worrying about the financial costs etc so I just want to put her mind at ease

  • Hi I'm so very sorry to hear about your dad I hope you can all get through this as easy as possible ,I've heard a few people on hear telling others to ring Macmillans cancer care and they will sort out many things for you including any benefits you would be due to so if I were you I would give the ones in your area a ring and explain your circumstances x

  • Hi Jenny, thanks for the advice I will give them a call. My wife has just recovered from breast cancer at least with her prognosis we knew it was curable and now this is totally the opposite there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. God only knows what my dad is thinking and going through and all the other families in similar situations. It’s totally heartbreaking

  • I'm glad its better news for your wife great that its curable for her ,such a shame about your dad heart breaking ,I hope Macmillans can help you all out on a few things it must be so confusing for you at a time like this ,take each day as it comes and deal with it or even each hour if you need to to ,let us know how you get on someone is always here for you to try and answer any questions you might have .

  • Thanks Jenny, yes it’s all too much to take in at the moment. Hoping he can have some time at home before his condition worsens. He can only eat puréed food so things like this I’m currently looking into but he’s also a diabetic so way too much going on

  • I am really sorry you are going through this, could you possibly get a second opinion maybe look for a specialist oncologist at a different hospital it may be worth asking for a referral, even look into trials of new treatments coming out, also definitely contact Macmillan they are excellent they will help your mom go through benefits forms you can most likely get PIP as he will need 24 hr care again ask Macmillan if there is a rush procedure for your dad's situation
