DCIS

I was diagnosed with DCIS 10 years ago. I had critical illness cover with legal and general insurance company, when I made a claim I was told my cancer wasn't cover. 10 years on the DCIS has returned this time I have been put on cancer tablets for at least 10 years and have to get a mastectomy and have lymph nodes removed. Got back in touch with Legal and General and their reply was sorry to hear about your Cancer returning but your claim is not going ahead. Which has completely left me so depressed I don't earn any money when I don't work, I don't know how I am going to pay my mortgage or my bills. Wish I never took my insurance out with L&G which costs me £70 a month which I have paid for 25 years if I had put that amount in a saving accounts I would not have this worry hanging over my head.

  • Hi Gloria,

Just to update you, I got a call yesterday to say that my claim was successful. Should receive payment in around 4 weeks.

I was DCIS high grade (no invasive) and had surgical removal (lumpectomy).

I hope you get the same good news :-)

    Xx

  • Hi,

so pleased to hear you got your claim renewed. Forwarded my claim n the hands of the financial ombudsman.

    hope I hear soon.

  • Hi Mary

still not heard anything from the financial ombudsman regarding my critical illness cover, I am on chemo tablets and getting my masectomy in 2 weeks. Will never recommend Legal and general as a insurance company.

  • So sorry to hear this Reena, the last thing you need.

I've had dealings with the financial ombudsman to in the past and they usually state they are only required to assess and reply within a certain timescale.

I'm presuming you've gone down the Ombudsman route because L&G have declined your claim? This is devastating for you, I'm so sorry.  Words fail me although I could think of a few!!   Try not to stress too much over this though, you must prioritise your surgery and recovery.

Interesting what Sausage1 has advised on applying for PIP.  This is certainly worth doing.  I would also enquire if it can be backdated to the time of your diagnosis.

Wishing you all the best for your surgery.  I had a mastectomy and it wasn't as bad as I expected.  Very little pain and quite quick recovery.  You're not quite there, but not long to go now.  Good Luck.

    Mary xx

  • Hi,

That's great news I got a call on Friday to say they were now contacting my consultant for information so I reckon it'll be 6 weeks before I hear anything else. Was it the 25% payment you will receive?

    xx

  • Hi all

I hipe you don't mind me asking

sorry to jump on thread , do life cover pay out on a cancer diagnosis ? I'm lately post breast cancer sugery I'm to with legal and general ?

  • Thanks Gloria.

    Yes it is the 25%.

I hope you get the same outcome xx

  • Hi laraj

My payout was specifically from a critical illness policy that I had taken out when I topped up my life assurance some time ago.

    Good luck with your claim

    Mary

  • Hi Positive T

Hope you're doing well.  This is interesting.  Did you have a critical illness policy attached to your life assurance?  I've got life assurance with Legal & General and another policy with AIG with an attached critical illness cover that I paid extra for.  I didn't contact L&G after my diagnosis and the payout I received was from the AIG policy.  You mention 25% payout.  What is that if you don't mind my asking.  Is that from a critical illness policy or just your life assurance?

    Thanks,

    Mary x

  • Hi Mary,

Nice to hear from you. I'm doing well! Hope you are too.

So, I have a critical illness policy with Aviva which is in addition to my life insurance. My policy includes a percentage payout for certain diagnoses (one of which is "breast cancer in situ that required removal by surgery" - very specific I know but basically DCIS). So with a successful claim you get 25% of the full policy amount (or 25k whichever is lower) and it does not affect the policy so in theory if I was later diagnosed with another qualifying critical illness my policy remains in tact. So it was the critical illness policy that I claimed through not life insurance.

Sounds similar to yours I think.

    Hope that makes sense!

    Lots of love xx
