Breast Pain after first radiotherapy session

Just wondering if this is normal. Got my first session yesterday and had tenderness to breast like period breast pain. Feels fuller and heavier as well. Second one today and again it feels heavy and tender.

  • Hello Debbietimtom,

I had 15 sessions of radiotherapy which ended in February 2020. I too experienced a heaviness in my breast very soon after having treatments. Even now I still get pains and almost a 'stiffness' in my breast. Oncologist tells me it's very common for this to occur and some women get it for years. I think I will be one of them!!

Although I find it disconcerting at times it hasn't got any worse but can be quite uncomfortable. Some days are worse than others.

Good luck with your treatment. Drink lots of water and moisturise!!! Go well.

    Kebbs.

  • Thanks for replying, when I mentioned to radiotherapist she said oh it looks ok but keep an eye on it as if it was uncommon. I've tried to drink lots and creams that they supplied too thanks.

  • I totally understand how you're feeling. I completed 5 radiotherapy treatments last week. After day 2 I felt queezy, and my side under my armpit & down my arm where so tight it was hard to lift my arm for my 3rd treatment.
My sister gave me an ice pack on returning from my 3rd treatment as my breast was on fire.
Keep aiming at the finish line!

  • Thanks for the reply. Have only to get 5 sessions so back today for 3rd session and will mention to them. Glad you have gotten to the other side.

  • Hi. Hope you've completed your 5 radiotherapy sessions, I hope your radiotherapy team and breast nurse were helpful. My breast nurse explained to me that unlike an operation when the cut begins healing immediately afterwards; radiotherapy is the start of the process and works going forward and side effects can happen at differing points and show in various ways on different people.  A week on I'm still feeling sore, my ribs hurt and I'm sure my breast appears smaller. I think I'm getting more used to the feelings, I don't think they're yet improving though. The tightness under my arm and down my side eased for a couple of days, this morning it's back really tight.
Think positive now your radiotherapy is over and moving forward is a fantastic place to be!

    All the best.

  • Thanks for the reply.  Still got one to go on Monday. Had a wee review with nurse midweek who explained symptoms and when things happen etc so it was a lot clearer then.  Looking forward to no hospital visits for a while.

    Take care

  • Hi @Lg-recovery]‍

I have to have 5 sessions too. Has my first one today and am surprised to feel pain already. I thought this would happen after the course but not immediately. Did you take any pain killers please ?
