First mammogram since treatment ended

I was diagnosed with breast cancer on 12th May 2020.

It was Stage1, Grade 3 invasive ductal carcinoma and I had breast saving surgery, 6 rounds of chemotherapy and 10 rounds of radiotherapy.

I have been getting anxious about my first mammogram coming up but as I hadn't heard anything, I phoned the breast cancer nurse to be told there is a backlog of 5 - 6 months and no, it did not make any difference that I have been a cancer patient.

To be honest, I found this completely unacceptable and distressing and it has added to my anxiety.  I just wanted to get this first one behind me and breathe a little easier.

Has anyone else on here got this problem or is the backlog just in my area ?

  • Hello rcipussycat,

yes completely recognise what you say about the anxiety regarding the first mammogram after a cancer diagnosis.
Its a pressure, but one you know you just have to face.

I was diagnosed in October 2019 and was offered a mammogram in September 2020. I was a bit surprised as I thought it might not happen for months owing to Covid. However in the area I live in they do appear to prioritise those who have had cancer. I was very grateful for that of course. Don't know if it will be the same situation this coming year though.  I guess it's in the lap of the Gods really?

I am very sorry to hear what's happened to you because it's a very scary time and to hear it's been held up isn't at all what you need. I DO hope you will get an appointment as soon as possible.

I wonder if contacting your BC nurses might help?? They would I am sure at least carry out a thorough examination which might help you in the meantime? Nothing is like a mammogram though of course.

    Wishing you well.
    Kebbs.
