Thick mucus issue

I will be starting my 3rd week of radiotherapy tomorrow for tonsil cancer however in the meantime I am having a big issue with very thick mucus.  It does not help that I also suffer from nasal drip.  The mucus tends to make me gag if I lie on my back.

I am still eating what I can via my mouth although swallowing is now getting quite painful and I really struggled yesterday to swallow scrambled egg.  When I saw the dietician on Thursday I was told it was probably too early for me to be fed via the PEG.  When drinking liquid like water I tend to swallow a lot of air with it and then later a massive burp.  About 4 times a day I rinse my mouth with a saline solution and also use Mucosaim after rinsing my mouth.

This morning was the worst for the thick mucus and eventually I had to get out of bed early to build up of  thethick mucus.  When lying on the table for treatment initially I have an issue was can feel the mucus in the back of my throat and trying to swallow it is extremely uncomfortable and difficult.

Why is it that on a weekend when they are closed you seem to have more issues than normal?  LOL!  Is there anything that can be done to thin out the mucus even if I have to go to Boots?

  • A warm welcome to Cancer Chat Surfer although I'm sorry about the problems you're having at the moment. It sounds very challenging.

Two of our lovely regulars [@RadioactiveRaz]‍ and [@PlumB]‍ ‍finished their treatment for tonsil cancer a couple of years ago now but still pop on the forum when they can to help others, so hopefully they'll be able to give you some pointers on how they managed when they're back online.

In the meantime you're welcome to have a chat with one of our cancer nurses about this on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m- 5p.m.

I hope this helps and you're able to get on top of this soon.

    All the best,

    Steph, Cancer Chat Moderator

  • I have issues with nose and chest not tonsils. Being dehydrated makes things much worse. Consultant told me I needed to stay very well hydrated to keep mucus thin. Don't know whether this could be applicable to your own situation or not. Hope you find something to help alleviate symptoms soon. X

  • Hi Hazel, They are giving me a nebuliser today so will be using it frequently.  Thought about a humidifier but was worried noise would keep my wife awake at night plus she suffers from asthma.

Dietician is confusing me about feed.  I had to start earlier this week and they keep giving me drips and drabs enough for two days at a time.  Nutircia informed us of a delivery but only for syringes?  Th eonly order they have for feed is in January?  This is stressing me out!

Anyway seeing dietician later today and hopefully get an answer.
