Trouble eating with early esophageal cancer

Please has anybody got any advice. My husband was diagnosed with esophageal cancer 7/7. Has now had ct which showed no spread PET scan done yesterday phone consultants on Tuesday to discuss way forward.

He is now showing more signs of difficulty eating any ideas on what I can do to help him.

  • Hi bebe0309,

I'm sorry to read about the difficulties your husband is having. Unfortunately I'm not sure how best to advise, but as you have an appointment tomorrow then the best thing will be to discuss any questions or concerns with the consultant.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi, he needs soft food, full fat no diet stuff,

red meat and bread will irritate so avoid those.

when I could eat solids ( up to 4 weeks ago) I had scrambled eggs, omelettes, stews, mince , mashed potatoes  with cheese in etc. Soups are good.

    hope this helps

  • Thank you pam yes we will take your advice and discuss with consultant tomorrow. Hoping for good news that pet scan confirms no spread and they can operate soon get it all out and give him back to me.

he is eating fruit and gourmet yoghurt for breakfast, houmous for lunch and then a small dinner ( omelettes tonight) followed by a pudding later on rice, custard etc.

hes been told tumour is small and he is a fit and otherwise healthy 55 yr old, never smoked, very occasional drink (no longer). We just can't believe this is happening. Hoping tomorrow brings real positive news.

look after yourself best wishes to us all

  • I found hard fruit ( apples etc) too difficult to eat, strawberries, raspberries, etc were fine, tinned rice pudding is good, and porridge for brekkie, when that got too difficult I had ready brek as it's smoother , cant have that now, ask to be referred to a dietician who if your hubby loses weight can prescribe some meal replacement drinks, she / he will also be able to give you further ideas for meals

  • Hi , sorry to hear about your husbands plight. I am going through very similar now. Waiting for a PET scan to hopefully confirm very little spread, I know it has moved to a very localised lymph node, which isn't a problem as far as surgery availability is concerned, as long as it hasn't travelled further. I appreciate your post is 2 years old but I have only just joined the forum after my diagnosis yesterday. I would love to know a little about your journey and hopefully the satisfactory outcome. I obviously understand if you don't wish to share more.. good luck
