Coronavirus Stopping Urgent Cancer Treatment

I just can’t understand why the government is not centralising patients with coronavirus who live in the North of the country.

People with other serious very urgent potentially life threatening illnesses (cancer specifically) are being denyed urgent treatments because of all hospitals shutting down to all other illnesses except coronavirus patients.

This means people who have a potential cancer diagnosis cannot get confirmation for example with a scan, or biopsy, or endoscopy and therefore cannot be given potential lifesaving treatment.

We are told time is of the essence. Therefore why has the government not dedicated several northern hospitals or built a new hospital like the one down south so that other local hospitals can continue to treat other urgent patients (cancer).

It is such a stressful and worrying situation.

I have been teased for taking precautions with carona virus, ie hand gel, rubber gloves, masks!

I can’t believe people are continuing to ignore the social distancing which we have been told to follow. I am begging people to

please take every precaution possible to keep coronavirus at bay because coronavirus May mean hospital and that means other people needing hospital are unable to get it and are also dying.

  • Hi,  I completely agree with your post and it seems cruel and inhumane to leave Cancer patients without diagnosis  treatment. I'm hoping my Radiotherapy will go ahead soon  but my Consultant told me today that may not happen due to virus.

  • Hi Shelly.

I hope your treatment goes ahead soon. Will it be your first treatment?

I have just heard on the tv two more quick dedicated hospitals are being made and hopefully that will mean the local hospitals can be freed up to at least accommodate urgent referrals and treatment, but there is nothing currently being built in the yorkshire area. It seems that Yorkshire always gets pushed to the bottom of the pile.

    It’s very frightening.x

  • Thanks Kadash

I hope they get things sorted soon for everyone.

I'm over the hilss in Burnley, Lancashire so we're neighhbours :)

  • Hi i am having weekly chemo since last year August and reaponding well some tumours dissapeared even.I am on chemo break on my request till 15.4.but i am stressed and worried that they will stop the treatment.I called the nurse she told me if i dont get a phone call everything continues. Now I am not sleeping because my brain is working and everyday i am so stressed dreading from every phone call thinking its the hospital.I dont know how long can do this.Only 2 days I have good days  its Saturday and Sunday when i know there will bw no phone calls.I find it so cruel and disquisting.

  • I feel really bad for those of you whose treatment has been thrown into chaos or delayed at such a time. Our breast unit sent me a letter about my first follow up appt after mastectomy and starting anastrozole being "postponed", and routine mammograms being stopped for now, Ive been wondering what is happening to all those just presenting for the first time, and what will happen to them now operating theatres are turning into spaces for coronavirus patients. My heart goes out to anyone pending diagnosis or wondering whats happening to their treatment arrangements. I have another condition, am on steroids and methotrexate, which according to NHS own guidelines makes me increased/high risk, yet got no high risk warning letter, and GP surgery says it cant access the list and it should come direct from NHS or Public Health England. My consultants team  who saw me on 13/3 said today they spent ages this weekend triaging their patients and they will be sending letters out, however they also have to hand write the envelopes  Thats "just" for 600 patients, hope theyve got enough stamps!!!! You really couldnt make this up could you. stay safe everyone

  • 100% agree with you on this.

I feel as many people will die from non-covid illness’s as with the virus through a complete lack of medical care.

This is not a criticism of the NHS but a criticism of the Government (this one and past Govt.’s) who have starved the NHS of resources for over a decade.  We have a pandemic (which admittedly is rare) but the country still needs a functioning health service and there isn’t one if you have cancer it seems to me. Everywhere I hear treatments are being ‘postponed’  It’s absolutely not acceptable. We live (or used to) in a civilised and wealthy country. People ought not to be made anxious for weeks about whether or not they will get the treatment they need.

I  am very fortunate that my treatment ended on 28th February this year. How lucky was I? BUT my heart is with those who find themselves in the unenviable position of ‘not knowing’ when they will be treated/operated on etc. The anxiety  of all this can paralyse people. It stops your life.

Its also not just cancer. People needing dialysis and treatments like that are also feeling discarded. It feels a bit like 1918 must have done. Treatment is scarce, alongside compassion and sensible planning of services for all.

I owe a lot to the NHS  it’s an amazing organisation. The point of it though is to serve us ALL, paid for through the taxes we pay. I ask for better Government support for the NHS (as a given, not as a desperate ploy in desperate times) and that we as a society see its importance and ‘value’ it by being happy to pay a bit more to keep the heart of the NHS beating and it’s values alive in all our communities.

I am thinking of everyone reading this and anxious about their situations. I wish you well.  This ought not to be happening.

  • Thank you everyone for your comments. I am so sorry but I am short of words today.  I’ve just heard that cancer treatments will be stopped for a minimum of 12 weeks. I just don’t have the words to express how I feel. I am in shock. Please stay safe my thoughts are with you all.xx

  • Sadly that was the choice the electorate had in December but they chose to ignore the parties which offered an alternative.

  • Yes davek. I totally agree. Perhaps the majority of people don’t want a properly funded NHS?? All this money this country is now spending to support people has ALWAYS been there. It’s just always been ‘saved’ for the richest people.

However I guess this site isn’t about party politics. It IS about people who are suffering, people are scared and who deserve the very best of health care because cancer is very scary and serious.

Go well in these toughest of times

  • I was diagnosed with high grade dcis in Feb..had mri and went back for results 2 weeks ago..inconclusive as they found other spots and another one in the other breast..had an appointment on the 6th of april that has just been cancelled and moved to the 20th...this is a phone call appointment.

I'm going out of my mind because I dont know what is going on and what my diagnosis is....the thought that it could be months before I find out is a nightmare.

It's amazing what goes through your head when everything is uncertain
