Chemo and mouth problems

Day 4 of my 3rd round of FEC chemo. Sore throat and a dry mouth that is waking me in the night unable to swallow. Croaky throat. Using soft tooth brush, prescribed mouth wash and fluids. I also have tube of Biotene, saliva replacement gel. I have heard that chewing gum is good too. Temperature low 38.5 so don't want to take Paracetamol to lower it even more. Has anyone else had these side effects. Skin so dry too, using masses of  E45 and Rose cream on my face. Worried it may be Virus too,  Been to hospital for chemo and my partner is a key worker but being extremely careful.

  • Hi Silverdays,

I'm sorry to read that you are suffering these side effects. I had a few mouth ulcers during two of the 8 rounds of chemo - the 5th and 6th round I think. I was given Difflam for the 7th round but in fact didnt need to use it as I didnt get them again. I use the Cordysol Daily mouthwash otherwise.

I had the dry mouth issue in one cycle and used a saliva replacment spray which worked well. It didnt reoccur in subsequent cycles.

Regards skin problems - I had this almost from the start and have ben using 'Udderly Smooth' which is great and was recommended by the oncology nurse.

You said your temperature was low at 38.5 -  this is actually a fever level temperature! I have had to go to A&E when my temperature went above 38. Maybe this was a typo on your part and you meant 36.6 or something similar.

I hope you find ways to deal with the side effects and th eremaining treatments go well for you .

  • Yes, I meant 35.8 temperature. Low temp so hoping sore throat, dry mouth not a sign of the dreaded virus. I have some saliva replacement gel. The last time I had mouth problems was in the 3rd week of chemo but this one is the first week. At least I haven't got the nausea so far which I think is the worst. Thanks for cream recommendation I'll look at that!
