Second Chemo Session and Not Good

I had my second of six chemo sessions nearly two weeks ago and I've felt awful since. My first one wasn't as bad but it was at least 9 days before I started to feel better again. My treatment is TCHP which includes the nasty drug Docetaxel. I'm experiencing diarrhea with constant stomach gripes. I was hospitalised last Monday night as the pain I was experiencing was excuciating that they wanted me I for tests. I was okay the day after being on a drip to rehydrate and tests were clear of any infecton. Siince then I have to force myself to eat as everything I taste is disgusting and makes me feel nauseous. I've been taking anti sickness but they don't seem to be working. I've constant gripe in my stomach and still occasional diarrhea. I've got my next session a week on Wednesday. I just want to feel normal for a few days before I start session. Im feeling like I want to ask if there are any other options for treatment as don't think I can go through feeling constantly ill for next four months :/ Is this normal to feel constantly ill for the duration of chemo treatment?

  • I'm really sorry about the tough time you're having with your chemo at the moment Kajay but I want you to know that many of our members have also had similar challenges during their treatment so fingers crossed some of them will pop by soon to offer their support and advice.

Our cancer nurses are available for a chat on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m so be sure to give them a call as they'll do all they can to help you at this time as well.

I really hope things start to get better for you soon Kajay and wish you the very best with the rest of your treatment.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi kajay strong foods taste better but keep clear of live bacteria, (yougart, some cheese,) +grapefruit citrus fruits strong fizzy drinks aren't bad but most things little and often.

I was on docetaxel and about 10 days and nights i was being sick in between sessions. Oncologist should be able to sort out other meds that work better sometimes it trial and error though.

Remember it's for a good cause... To make you better. Good luck and best wishes for the future.

  • Hi Billy, thanks for reply. Thankfully, I've felt my normal self since Tuesday. So I'm hoping I continue to do until my third chemo session next Wednesday. I'm going to ask if they can change my anti sickness as I've read that the side effects of it are also diarrhea, as well as the Docetaxel. The only thing that is bothering me now is intense itching of my head. I can't wear anything on it as it makes it even worse. I have a spiky fuzz all over due to having it shaved off with hair clippers when it started falling out in clumps. I'm using Johnson's baby shampoo to clean it in shower. I'm wondering if I did another shave but a wet one with razor to get rid of the itchy spikey fuzz would help. It comes out when I pick at it but won't fall out naturally.

  • Hi kajay, just guessing but could your scalp be dry. Try some skin moisturiser.

Luckily i never had that problem being male and already very thin on top, but one surprising thing it grew back thicker and curly.

Best wishes with rest of treatment.

  • No, it not dry. The fuzz feels sore to touch too. I think it's the roots where the hair follicle has died but still attached. If I use tweezers the very short hair comes out easily. But obviously I've hundreds so a tweezer to remove isn't ideal.  Even washing doesn't remove the loose fuzz. It only really itches if I have scarf on or when I'm lying on it in bed. So I'm guessing it's the hair roots that are inflamed maybe.

  • Hi there,

I have just had my 3rd session of chemo, day 4. Expecting side effects to kick in but not too bad so far. My 1st was awful, constantly phoning nurses and the 2nd I was given steroids which made me physcotic and felt unwell for 9 days. This time my Oncologist gave me different anti sickness tablets which so far have been better. I keep record of the side efeects and then they can adjust your medication. Its all awful, but for the greater good I keep telling myself. I am 3rd down, 3 to go then 3 weeks of radiotherapy.

I think each cycle is slightly different and you learn more how to keep yourself feeling better. I have mouth sores on my 3rd week, but have been given mouth wash. My hair is not spiky as I havent shaved it, it is just fuzzy on top, not a good look!

What we go through, last year I was just working and being a normal person and now! And to top it all a Virus!

But we have a bit of support here, so keep going and Im sending you healing vibes!
