Chemo and Corona Virus

I'm just coming up to my 3rd cycle of chemotherapy for breast cancer. My oncologist has decided to do a telephone consultation so that I can stay away from the hospital before my next treatment. It's extra worry with coping with the side effects and now Corona Virus with a compromised white cell count to fight infection. I have decided to stay at home as much as possible, with just the occasional trip out for shopping. Staying away from crowded places and have put off any social gatherings for the time being.
I hope everyone is managing as best as they can.

  • It couldnt be more challenging. I just had a friend knock on the door but I wouldnt let him in. Just trying to stay safe. I have telephone consultation with my oncologist today as my chemo is Monday. I assume that will still go ahead. My blood test is at my GP's tomorrow and Ive been told to wait in the car and the nurse will come and get me.

  • Hi there all, my mum is 80 with a stage 3 breast cancer and lung nodules, we hsd a telephone  appointment this afternoon with oncologist and was told mums chemo tablet palbociclib has to be discontinued for 4 weeks and longer as the risk of chemo patients  of contracting coronavirus is greater because of the neutrophils being low,  they explained that the majority  of their patients  have been told they cannot continue with the treatment  for now, very disappointing  as she needs her meds but what can you do. Hope you all stay safe and well . Bless you all.xxx

  • Hiya

I was triple neg stage 1. I had chemo before surgery. That way they could watch the sucker shrink...or not then adjust the chemo to.make sure it did. Logically for me and for my hospitalthat was the only option. But now u have covid to worry about..will they give u chemo? If they are hesitating to do that take the lumpectomy and come back and blast it. TNC will let u know if its still there so u can deal with it should the first lot not work. I got infection whilst with chemo....terrifying. i was quarantined in hospital. I really didnt think i was gonna pull through. Not all chemo is the same and they throw heavy stuff at TNC. Not sure id opt for it right now....no way would i want to be chemo and covid and in hospital! and im thinking about this choice as im back in for a biopsy in a couple of weeks...and have covid currently!!! Either way the onl right answer is thebone in your gut and tell yournloved ones your choice and tell them to.get on board with it

  • Hello lovely,

I am grade 3 triple neg, still only in breast not lymph nodes but aggressive - I was measuring 3cm with my lump and as they won't bring me in for appointments she said measure the lump yourself and we can see if it's shrinking -  just measured with the tape measure and it's 9!! I must be measuring the wrong way - dunno whether to laugh or cry.

Anyway, she said we can't do nothing. I could have surgery then still need chemo right after or chemo surgery radiation which was the original plan. I said sod it let's just do it as planned chemo first, like you I want that complete pathological response. And I am just hoping no covid 19 and wish all the people wandering around like it's flu would just stay home.

What did you decide? I am here if you need to chat lovely xxx

  • Sorry you’re in the same boat! I’ve opted for surgery first as 1. don’t want to risk a compromised immune system and coronavirus 2. who knows what the situation will be like in hospitals in a few weeks time. I’ve heard that operations are being cancelled and treatments reduced or postponed in the UK.
  • Literally walked downstairs from posting to you before and the oncologist rang me to say they were going to do surgery first, someone is going to ring me tomorrow. Stay in touch xx

  • I think its the best and probably only "good" option at the moment.  Take care!

  • And this morning the surgeon is in self-isolation - MDT meeting later so will find out the plan tomorrow, you take care too xx

  • hi my name is liam just to say that i have completed my chemo and don,t need to have anymore done and people say you can catch the virus even when you have finished chemo put is this true or false

  • hi just to let everyone know that you can catch the virus when you are on chemo and finished chemo just letting evryone know but i find it strange this can happen and i have found out that you can die  from it while you are on chemo and when you are not on chemo
