Constipation. Help!

I've just started my 4th cycle of carboplatin and was just wondering if anyone else has suffered from  bad constipation. ( it seems to have got worse with each cycle!) . I appreciate that this is normal  with chemo and I've been given medication to supposedly ease the problem but it's not really having any great effect. Has anyone got any remedies?  Tips? Will it just sort itself out?

  • Hello.. oh I feel for you. Been there and suffered really badly before finding a solution. My tip is lactulose.. I started to take it two days before my next chemo cycle and it really helped me get through the next cycles without the constipation. I also took a mild laxative in tablet form at night for a few days on the day of chemo and after. Everyone's bowel reacts differently but hopefully this may help you. Check with your chemo nurses. Snacking on pears also helped. Good luck.

  • Hi

If you are allowed to have them on your chemo and haven't already tried them,  then I recommend Movicol sachets. They work for me.

Hope you get it sorted out soon

  • I've had a touch of it. Nurses said a couple of Senna at night will help, Fruit, prunes, liquorice, cereals, plenty of water, I only know the usual. I had it badly after surgery, it made me sick. Doctor gave me suppository which helped immediately.
hope you feel better, I had my 2nd cycle of FEC chemo for breast cancer yesterday and waiting for side effects to kick in, it's no walk in the park this treatment!!

    Best wishes

  • Thank you for your reply. I've tried Laculose/ senna at night- but I'd say they don't work that well for me It's either constipation or the 'opposite'. It's a real problem and had has left me feeling quite unwell. I'll definitely try the pears!

  • Thanks for your reply. I've tried all sorts of medications -but at the moment they are not really working. It's either constipation or the opposite. ( maybe I should ask the doctor about suppositories!) I'm on my  4th cycle of Carboplatin. Symptoms have increased with each cycle. Hopefully I've only two more to go. I hope this problem sorts itself out. Thanks.

  • Thanks. Will find out about Movicol. Hope this problem sorts itself out.

  • Hi, I suffered horribly too, nothing I was given by the nurses helped......until I started drinking prune juice! By god that shifted it! Defo worth getting some in...it soon got me in a regular pattern again....good luck x

    Hi HRC3,

Sorry to hear about your distressing symptoms. I haven't had chemo, but have suffered with constipation as a result of the drugs I'm taking. I have tried several different meds for this, but have found CosmoCol to be the best. I use the lemon flavoured sachets and dilute these in lemon juice and soda water to improve the taste.

Recently, I have started taking dried figs instead and find that these work even better. I normally take 2 a day. When things are badly compacted, I just take an extra fig and that usually does the trick.

I hope that you get this problem sorted out soon.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
