The way forward

After undergoing 8 sessions of chemo and being very unwell (EC then paclitaxel) I am left with numb fingers and toes. I believed I was having a lumpectomy which changed on the morning of the operation to a mastectomy. I thought I was doing well at home then

early last week I was rushed into hospital with an infection in my wound and a very high temperature, I am still in hospital. Throughout all this I have remained extremely positive (I did loss my hair) and this morning I have noticed my eyelashes and eyebrows are falling out, perhaps/ probably feeling sorry for myself, but when does this ever start getting better? Just wanted to talk to someone. Family and friends are amazing but I don’t want to burden them.

  • Hi. I have no experience of breast cancer (undergoing tests for possible lung tumour) but I wanted to say hi.

I hope the hospital stay will not be for too long. Are you in any pain? The loss of hair etc must be traumatic and I cannot imagine what you are going through but if you need to talk I am here

  • Hello love,

im so sorry you've landed in hospital, any sign of when you can go home?

I lost every hair on my body ( except my legs)???? During fec chemotherapy...it truly sucks..I totally understand where your coming from. The bloated moon face alien was a look I didn't rock ...despite well meaning friends and family telling me I looked great (!)

But I promise you...it really DOES get better, my hair is growing in thick and fast...I have my eyebrows back...( boy did I miss them)

I was lucky...I only landed in hospital once during chemotherapy..and it was a short stay thank goodness...once your home you can begin to get some sort of a life back, you'll just have to take it really slowly and try not to run before you can walk. Delight in the small victories....what your poor body has endured is brutal....I think your pretty awesome love...xx

  • You really have been through the mill. I have had masectomy and I found I recovered quite quickly from the surgery. Once you are home again you will be feeling better I'm sure. I am dreading this morning, my second cycle of FEC chemo. I was so unwell the first one, but I at least I know what to expect this time. Lost all my hair and coming to terms with that. I'm going on the Feel good Feel better course at the hospital which I hope will help with the eyebrow eyelash loss. It is brutal this treatment and good to talk to people who have been through and understand.

Sending you healing vibes, keep up that warrior attitude!

  • Hi Marlyn,

How has your hair grown back? Is it curly and a different colour or similar to your own hair? And how long did it take to start growing again? I've heard it may change, just lost all mine first cycle of chemo!

  • Hello,

my hair grew back grey and very curly! I was completely bald in May and now it's about 4 inches long ( give or take) but seems shorter as it's so thick and curly. I ditched the wig and turbans in August, so it took around 3 months before I had the confidence to do it....

strangley it's much longer at the back...I'm refusing to get it cut as I'm thrilled I now have hair!

So, its cycle 2 for you today? My first was Defo the worse one, 2 and 3 were better ..good luck love xxx

  • Hi, I've got a way to go yet then! Chemo was nearly delayed today as blood count was low, but after another blood test it went ahead. Felt very tired on the way back so am having a snooze. Really hope this one isn't as bad as the last chemo, they've given me a few more meds so that may help. I hope my hair comes back thick and curly, I've always had fine straight hair! It was a silvery grey with highlights before I lost it and I liked it a lot......I hope yours grows and grows!
    Love Silver
