Hair growth while having chemo

Hi.  I am currently having chemo for breast cancer.  I lost my hair around cycle 2 but since cycle 5 (of8) it's been growing back.   I asked the nurse and oncologist and they both said it is rare.  I was wondering if anyone else has had this.

  • Hi,

I am glad I have just come across this post, although a little late. I am having chemotherapy and immunotherapy for breast cancer.

My hair began to shed at around day 16 after my first cycle of chemo. After my second cycle it fell out more rapidly and I shaved it on a number 2. It did shed a bit further but i have never gone bald. My hair started growing back more after my 3rd cycle. It is growing back black and straight, my natural colour is dark brown. I have some quite thick patches of hair at the back and behind my ears and it is much thinner on top where you can see my scalp.

I spoke to my Dr about this and he also said it isn't common but can happen. He said I must have strong hair that doesn't want to go anywhere which made me laugh.

I don't know if this matters but strangely i never lost any of my arm hair and the rest of my body hair did slow down growing significantly but did not completely disappear. My eyebrows have thinned but they were thick anyway so it isn't too noticeable and my eyelashes have not fallen out at all.

I haven't used the cold cap as it was unavailable due to COVID.

I'd be really interested to hear others experiences.

  • I Know this is quite an old post but thought id reply. Ive got stage 4 bowel cancer. Im on Flouracil and Panitumumab cant remember the other one. At fitst I lost hair under my arms and then I had half bald legs with a line down the middle lol. Unfortunately I didnt lose the hair on my head which would save me cutting it.

Its mainly all grown back now. Hair under my arms seems slower to grow back.

    Hope everyone is doing well.

    Ben x

  • Hi, my hair came out after the 2nd round of chemo on the 16th Feb 2024.  I had someone come and shave my head a couple of days later. My hair has already started to grow back, I have 2 more rounds of chemo to go. I wasn’t expecting this to happen at all. Good luck
