Pathology results

Hello all,

Help! Just had the pathology results of my masectomy and axillary node surgery. Chemo, then radiotherapy, then medication. I will start treatment in about 4 weeks after my surgery has healed. Consultant said it will be a year of treatment, feeling depressed this evening, but tomorrow is another day .....one day at a time

  • Hi Silver,

So sorry to hear you are going through this now and thinking of a year of treatment is very daunting. But you can do it! Take it one appointment, one treatment, one test at a time. Expect setbacks, but don't let them crush you when they happen. It's ok to be depressed, to mourn the loss of your "normal" life for a time, just know that eventually you will be done with it and hopefully begin to feel normal again.

Good luck to you, keep us posted on how you progress.

  • Thank you Laura, for your reply. I was very nauseous and sick after my op, so am dreading my chemo. I was told I would be having radiotherapy only so it was a shock to discover that I have to have chemo. But what is the alternative? As you say, one step at a time and hopefully on the road to recovery.

  • Hi Silver

How you doing after the mastectomy, how are you finding it now?

Really sorry to hear your results have now shown you need further treatment.  I hope you don't mind me asking but were many of your lymph nodes affected?

I don't get my results until 7th January so playing the waiting game here and absolutely dreading it.

Really wishing you all the best.

  • Hello Rosie,

The masectomy is healing well, I have had the dressing removed now, after 12 days. Not too much bruising. It has fluid swollen a bit and they will maybe drain that at my appointment in a few weeks. (Something else to look forward too!) The only sore place is under the arm and I am only taking paracetamol occasionally.  It was a bit confusing the results of the lymph nodes. The Consultant said he had done an axilliary clearance, but according to the pathology report only 2 nodes were affected. He would expect more than that so they are doing more tests. Ill find out more in a few weeks. I was told before that I would have radiotherapy and chemo wasnt mentioned, but when I went for results was told I have I will have chemo, then radiotherapy, then medication. I was shocked and unhappy about the chemo. But with me there were 2 white spots on the MRI scan that are under my chest wall. They cant be biopsied becaused they are behind bone, so to be sure to kill the cancer cells anywhere it will mean chemo. Yours might be completely different. I was told it was Stage 2. Whatever the outcome Rosie, we have to go through it or what is the alternative? Ive been told my treatment will take a year!! So my life is on hold, but trying to make the best of it, at least I have a few weeks respite now to enjoy some family time. Hope it wll goes well for you. Please let me know your results and we can compare the horribleness of it all!!! Try and relax and be 'comme ci comme ca' I know its hard, but wishing you all the best for your results.

  • Hey Silver

What a rollercoaster journey eh?  Sorry that chemo came as such a shock. Suddenly it seems scarier when that's involved (at least it does to me).  I keep reminding myself that it's the best way of clearing up anything that's left.

Chemo keeps being mentioned for me, but first of all I'm going back in Jan for an axillary node clearance.  I have been told to expect RT and chemo.

Will be thinking of you x
