First chemo session - any advice?

I have my first chemo in the 2nd December.im quite  nervous and worried about how I will cope with side effects. Any advise?

  • I think my main advise would be to try not to be too nervous and worried (much easier said than done, I know!)  I had my first chemo 7 weeks ago, and the oncology team really do do everything they can to minimise side effects. It is very difficult to predict which patients will get what side effects - some get none at all and some do get quite a lot, so you really never know what will happen. So another reason not to worry unnecessarily, if possible.  The oncology team now commonly provide anti-sickness and anti-nausea meds during the chemo itself, and also give supplementary meds to take as when you need them at home for sickness. For other side effects like neuropathic symptoms that some treatments give some people, you will no doubt get advise like wearing gloves to protect hands, scarf/neck warmer to protect throat if it affects you there.  I have seen some patients wearing cold caps during their treatment to help reduce hair loss, though not all chemos cause hair loss. So its very much dependent on which chemo you have and how you react yourself, but most importantly the oncology team will be doing all they can to help you manage and minimise any side effects that you do experience. The phrase they used for me was "dont be a hero - tell us about everything, any issues you do have we should be able to help with".  Also I have got useful tips from other patients receiving treatment at the same time as me (and I've only had three treatments!).   I hope it goes ok for you on the 2nd :)

  • Thank you for all your information and help.i have my pre assessment on Wednesday, I'm sure I will get more information then as well.

  • Hi

So it's completely natural to worry as it's the unknown, I was exactly the same, and my first session was a bit of an anti climax if I'm honest after I'd worked myself up about it.
My chemo nurses were brilliant, some tips would be take some entertainment with you, film or a book or something as you will be there for longer on your first appointment. Food if it's over lunch time. Take all the tablets they give you, don't be a hero like squire says, whatever happens the care team will work to sort it out, they want it to be as easy as possible for you. Eat what you want when you fancy it, sleep when you need to and don't be surprised if making it from the bed to the sofa is the biggest achievement of your day.  Once you get through the first one it will settle your mind and you'll be ready to take on the next one. If you want to chat or have any other questions just ask away.
