Complications with a relative

so, three weeks ago my dad was diagnosed with throat cancer. It hasnt spread to his lymphnodes but is around the area. He was due to start chemo and radio therapy yesterday but has been admitted into hopital with infection and bleeding (we think its cause he just had  his feeding tube fitted). This means his treatment starts next week and im terrified that he is losing his chances of fighting this.

can someone give me insight on his chances as blunt as that is?

  • Hi if it's only in the throat then it's not very big so good chance are they only using kemo and rad or are they going to operate as well. Not always but sometimes they shrink it with treatment then remove it because it does less damage to the throat. Good luck with your dads treatment.

  • Hi M66

So sorry to hear of your dads cancer,

The cancer is not in his lymph nodes, that is at least some good news for him and you of course.

Is your concern that his treatment is delayed by a week or so? Its most important that he has no infection before chemo. So they will get that cleared up first. So do try not to worry.

The treatment is a pretty gruelling regime and you may find some of the throat cancer threads on here very useful. [@RadioactiveRaz]‍ and [@Anchor1707]‍ have made blogs of their treatment journey both very kind folks and so very helpful. It will give you an idea of what to expect from the insight of others experience.

    Best wishes xx

  • Hi M66

To be blunt his chances are very good.
I totally understand the agnst but although this type of cancer has one of the most challenging treatments and more importantly recovery from, it also has a very high success rate and chance of cure.
I started a thread here and its really popular with lots of contributions from many helpful people. Its here under Living with Cancer and titled Radiotherapy for Throat cancer. Please feel free to read/post/join in.
I was disgnosed with Tonsil cancer late last June and am in recovery phase just now but got through it along with positive reaction to treatment and got the all clear on 5th March so the light at the tunnel does actually exist.Have a read of my blog that I kept from the get go, warts and all and that should give you an insight into the journey your dad can perhaps expect, althrough we are all different in terms of recovery times etc. Also a link to another blog from Hazel here.who has been through as well.
Please keep us posted and feel free to ask away any questiuons you have and also let me know if I can help in any way at all.

by the way, you should not be alarmed at the extra week or so delay for treatment. It wont make any difference really. I had surgery for tonsil removal then further surgery for teeth extraction then recovery time before my treatment could start and was advised it was of no concern to the consultant re the delay.

    kind regards

  • Hi all,

thank you very much for your responses as they have made me feel at ease.

to go into more detail my dad is having radio and chemotherapy. They are shrinking it and removing it, no surgery.

he has a history of heart health issues and im just scared of complications like infection, blood clot etc

i will update as he goes along!

  • Hi M66

His team of Drs will have scrutinised his medical and general health before deciding his treatment. They have choices of which Chemo to use in individual patients.

The liver and kidneys are the areas they are cautious with chemo. But I can understand your worries for him though. I was deemed as not suitable/fit for chemo and I had mixed feelings about that.

They will keep a close eye on his bloods etc. So hopefully he will not have clotting problems.

    Keep in touch x

  • [[ ]]Hello,

So it's been a long journeys and a long time since i've updated you.

My dad had 10 weeks of chemo and radiotherapy, he lost his taste and started feeding through a tube.

He lost his spirit but kept fighting.

Seven months later the story has a happy ending. As of yesterday my dad is officially cancer free.

Thank you guys for your support honestly.
