Tonsil cancer and recovery, my story so far.......

Tonsil cancer and recovery, my story so far.......

I discovered a small lump on the left hand side of my neck, just under my jaw, sort of gland area in May 2018. I assumed it was a swollen gland, but when it didn't go away after approx. 2 weeks, I went to my doctor. He wasn't overly concerned, but said it should be investigated if it was still there after 3 weeks, which it was. I went back to my doctor and he referred me to an ENT clinic. I underwent various tests, blood test, ultrasound, biopsy, CT scan and pet scan and all of the results were inconclusive, the doctors were adamant that the lump was harmless, however they would have to remove the lump. The operation was a success and a 4.5cm lump was removed, one week later I was told that it was cancer, a secondary cancer with an unknown origin. A second operation was required to find the origin, so my tonsils were removed, a small piece from the base of my tongue and all lymph nodes from the left hand side of my neck. This operation was much more complex, took around 4 hours and recovery was very difficult to say the least. Around a week later again I was told the cancer had originated in my left tonsil (HPV+) and found in a further 4 lymph nodes. No trace of cancer in my tongue thankfully and the lymph nodes with cancer were directly surrounding my tonsil and had not spread further down my neck. Around 40 lymph nodes were removed in total. I was told I would need 6 weeks of radiotherapy.  Which, quite frankly was the worst news ever, based on the possible/likely side effects, and not forgetting that horrible mask. I was to have a high dose of radiation to the left hand side of my neck and a lower dose to the right. I postponed my treatment until after christmas and at this very moment I finished my treatment just over 6 weeks ago. The treatment was difficult and I felt side effects almost immediately, my saliva thickened up and my taste changed very quickly. I managed to eat the whole way through and even now without too much pain, obviously with a lot of medication. I am on a fairly strict, bland diet so not to aggravate my throat and ulcers. I started getting ulcers towards the end of my treatment which are only just clearing up now, but over the past few days managed to get oral thrush too.  I get quite alot of pain in my jaw/gum that goes up to my ear, which is really painful at night, but have eventually found a pain killer to help that. The mucous towards the end of my treatment got pretty bad and is only just subsiding. My taste is quite good already and saliva slowly getting better. I am convinced that I have faired better than most throughout the treatment because of the lower dose of treatment to the right hand side of my neck. I had no internal side effects on that side whatsover, just slight burning on the exterior. The left hand side of my neck burned quite badly in the end, then scabbed, then peeled, over already fragile skin due to the previous operations, but it did heal quickly. I am of course still healing and still very much in recovery right now, but I'm hoping things will still get better. Looking forward to my first packet of crisps and sweeties and of course some alcohol........

I thought I would share my story in the hope that I can help someone else, or give other tonsil cancer patients hope and be able to give some friendly advice if needed.  I am 38 years young, diagnosed at 37 if that is of any interest.

Best wishes to you all x

  • Hi,

ive just got back now. Thankfully the results were normal I’m made up but still need to get to the bottom of what’s been making me so ill so heart clinic follow up and neurology I think is the path forward.

Good luck on your journey and thank you so much for the support and advice xx

  • That's great news, I'm pleased to hear it.  I hope you get to the bottom of whatever is wrong soon enough and that it doesn't cause you too much worry.  Good luck to you too, take care x

  • Hi Ladydi2901

I am currently 12 weeks post treatment , I too discovered a lump under my left jaw bone and had the diagnosis confirmed on the 9th April 2019 , I had no operations except a biopsy from the cancer by the left tonsil . I had 6 weeks of radiotherapy and 2 days of chemo . The treatment was fine but the side effects were tough . The initial weeks after treatment were really tough but August was better , recently I have struggled with getting the calories down even though my mood has lifted , just never feel hungry ! I seem to be producing some saliva but at night sporadically I have dryness to the mouth and other nights nothing . The ulcers to my mouth have taken a while to clear but are almost gone , my taste buds are good i think it’s the general yukky mouth that I find hard to deal with , but reading about Hazel a year on and her mouth being 85% back is amazing and encouraging. I would settle for that .... I just want my mouth to improve quicker but impatience doesn’t help ! I am 52 but have always been fairly fit and this helped massively through the treatment weeks , I didn’t need the PEG or anything , but all these weeks later my motivation has dropped and I must work on this . I have my PET scan tomorrow morning and hopefully this will show all the bad stuff killed off . Anyway thanks for sharing your story and good luck with the future

Ps can eat well buttered baguette s niw ni more pappy white bread , plus seeded brown bread as well , at a push a cream cracker crisps still take 46 mins for a 30 gram bag but worth the pain ovcassylol !

    onwards and upwards

  • Hi Peter,

The side effects are the worst aren't they!!  I started getting side effects really quickly into treatment, but they weren't terribly bad until the end and thereafter.  I had times where I din't feel like eating, but I never felt that I wasn't hungry, surprisingly I've had a healthy appetite through out.  I wonder if there is something you can do to stimulate hunger?!  I've been really focused on regaining the weight that I lost, so I am eating more calories than normal, and at times I've got to force myself to eat when I don't feel hungry, but it's for the great good. I only have 5/6 lbs to go.  My saliva production has very very slowly improved over time and I think it's still improving.  My dry mouth never wakes me, but I wake in the morning with with a very dry, sticky mouth, but I live in hope this will improve.  I had ulcers for a really long time too, it was horrible, I'm sorry to hear you are still suffering, hopefully they leave you for good soon!  My taste buds are good too, just missing spicy food, I've tried a few mild spicy dishes and I really struggle, my tongue seems to be really sensitive to spice, but again I'm hoping that improves and I can enjoy spicy food again.  At 7 months post treatment I am feeling really good.  Do you have any pain in your jaw if you over stretch your mouth yawning?

I think you can feel up and down after everything we have been through, it's hardly surprising really.  I hope you manage to summon up some motivation to push on, think loads of positive thoughts and perhaps set yourself some goals or do some things on your bucket list.

I have been enjoying walking again, after months of not doing too much, I have been getting out again and exploring my surroundings.  I'm lucky enough to live in Scotland and have so many beautiful places to visit.

I hope your scan went well.

  • Hi Diana

Many  thanks for the response , it really was a great boost especially reading at 7 months post treatment you are doing so well and have made huge progress , long may it continue ! On Monday I felt hungry for the first time in so long and along with the Fortisip drinks and full fat milk shakes I am now pushing to hit 3000 calories a day , I feel so much more positive and am determined to maintain this , I had a PET scan last week and next Wednesday I am seeing the consultant to get the results. Sometimes my jaw aches when yawning but all through treatment and sporadically since I have kept up the exercises that the speech therapist gave me to do and I think that has helped massively to keep strength in the jaw and maintain good swallowing . I went to the Gym today , the first time in ages and it did me the power of good so I feel I could be on the right track ! All I need is the all clear next week and I will feel I have my life back .

    kindest regards

    Peter

  • Hello again,

Yes I am doing good, thankfully, there was honestly a time though that I thought the pain would never end and I couldn't see the light and look at me now, I'm so very close to my pre cancer self!

Good stuff, keep going even if you don't feel hungry just eat, it's the only way to gain/maintain your weight, and the more you eat, you might retrain your body to feel hungry.  I hope your results where as you expected?

I wasn't good at doing the exercises, I've got to say, the minute I felt pain I stopped, I had enough pain going on, never mind adding to it.  Although as time goes on, it is getting easier, I should probably start doing them now as any improvement would be better than none.

Pleased to hear you are feeling more motivated, it's amazing what a little exercise can do for you.  Good job!

  • Hi Diana

I had the results from my PET scan last Wednesday and I am pleased to say the cancer has gone and I have been given the all clear , looking at the original scan from when  I was diagnosed to the latest one showing no signs of any nasty stuff was amazing to see . The good news has taken a couple of days to sink in though .

I hope your progress is continuing

  • Hi. I just thought I would send you a message as I remember it helped me to know that people had come out the other side.

i was diagnosed with tonsil cancer in 2013 when I was 45 with two young children. I had no symptoms other than a lump in my neck. It was HPV. The treatment was horrendous but I got the five year all clear in 2018.

now I have thicker skin on the radiotherapy side of my neck and I still struggle to eat really dry stuff like cheese rolls but other than that I am fine and very grateful.

a friends sister has just been diagnosed with liver cancer and it does always bring it all back. So I thought I would check in!

stay strong and keep smiling. Xx

  • Hi Peter congratulations welcome now to the next part ,onwards and upwards from here .
