horrendous mucus after radiotherapy

Hi my husband is 4 weeks post radiotherapy and has suffered horrendous mucus through out. He was under the impretion that it would get worse for 2 weeks after radiotherapy and then start getting better, but 4 weeks on and he still has tons of the stuff and his mouth feels vile.

Just wondered if anyone can tell him realisticly how long it takes for the mucus to start cleaaring and any tips to try to get it a bit fresher. He is unable to swallow yet either and has to feed throuh his PEG

  • Thanks Hazel for the advice. Funnily enough my speech & language therapist said the same yesterday about eating smaller meals. He did imply I should walk before I can run. I'm still feeling the effects of the radiotherapy so I guess it's still early days. Fortunatley the NHS prescribed fortisip 400 Kcal drinks which I have 3 of daily plus small meals as described previously. That gets me up to 2000 calories a day and my weight is stable.  I just wish I could fight off the bouts of depression I'm getting. It does come and go but talking to people who have experienced the same is a good way to combat it.

    Many thanks

  • Hi. I have been reading through all the comments regarding mucas and wondering how you are all getting on. My partner had a tumour removed from his tonsil in January and last week finished 35 sessions of radiotherapy and 2 chemotherapy. Although he has been able to drink milk and water throughout he has suffered terrible with thick mucas which he is constantly coughing up. We have a nebuliser and a humidifier but neither seem to be helping. It is getting him very down. And I just want to hear there is light at the end of the tunnel cause after being so poorly during treatment with sickness and fatigue. He is trying to stay positive but it's starting to get him down.
I know everyone is different but would love to hear how you are all doing now and what to expect.
he is only 9 days since treatment ending and managed a tiny bit of mashed potatoes and yogurt today.
    thanks Jenny

  • Hi Jenny,

Sorry to hear about your husband, but it's still very early days. The 2 weeks post treatment are the worse as the radiation is still at it's peak. The constant thick mucous will subside, with me it took about 3-4 weeks. I'm now 10 weeks and can eat soft foods and drink OK. My taste is still badly impaired but it is slowly recovering. I do still have mucous issues, including a dry mouth in the morning and the mucous can be stringy, I use a facial sauna as a steam inhaler which does help (ebay). It's a long haul which for your husband can seem daunting, I do suffer from depression at times but it does pass. However I had a couple of beers at the weekend whilst watching the football on TV and that is a positive sign. Porridge and creamed rice have been my saviour and I'm still supplementing my diet with Fortisips ( NHS supplied) to get me to 2000 calories a day. I hope that info helps. Keith

  • Hi Jenny this is Hazel I'm 3.5 years post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes. I'm proof there's light at the end of tge long tunnel it just takes  time to get there. My blog www.radioactiveraz.wordpress.com may help you get to the end.
    good luck

  • Hi, I'm new to this (Tonsil) and not sure reading these posts are a good thing or not as still going through the process and trying to take each day as it comes. Friday was day 13 of radio so 1/2 way on Tues. I was fine until Wed but now suffering (as I write this at 3am ).

I have thick mucus, dry mouth and sore tongue. Anything vaguely acidic hurts my tongue and having trouble swallowing already. My wife made a beef casserole with mash this evening and I managed to eat most of it. Took ages but tried to persevere but really struggling thinking about how much worse it will get from here.
Has anyone got any tips on sleep? I find if I sip water all day then it is currently manageable but if I go for any period without water my mouth dries up and obviously this includes at night. I am waking up several times at night to drink and it is very painful after being dry/sleeping for 30 mins.

    Thanks,

    Robert

  • Hi Hazel
I'm 2 weeks post treatment so at the peak.  Still quite a bit of mucus . How long did it take yours to go ? I can't wait !
       Thanks Donna

  • BunDonna well done on completing treatment. The mucus for me went around 7 week period onky to be replace with the dreaded dry mouth which I still have to some extent b4 years down the line. It's manageable.  Blog might give yiu some tips. Www.RadioactiveRaz.wordpress.com

plus try  sipping soda water to help it disperse plus I used a nebuliser at least 6 times a day

    best wishes Hazel xx

  • Hi all.  My mum was diagnosed with stage 4 NSC squamous lung cancer in September 2021.

She is 4 weeks post radiotherapy which we have been told a few days ago, made a good hit on her main central tumour.  She's also had Keytruda when first diagnosed which was incredible, however her oncologist was a sharlatan, and we ended up changing hospitals as it transpired he had purposely robbed her of further keytruda. Anyways, since changing hospitals, she had a strange sore come up on her hand which turns out was a lung cancer deposit!  she has had immunotherapy which miraculously also made the skin lesion vanish and the radiotherapy as I've already said has kicked the *** out of my tumour.  But, she has been left with an even worse cough and thick phlegm which is exhausting for her.  The radiotherapy Dr prescribed carbocisteine, of which she has been on for 1 week.  It has made it less thick but its an expectorant so cough is epic right now.  I guess I'm looking to see if anyone has had that medicine and if so, how long until their cough reduced? Also I'd like to make lung cancer, squamous sufferers aware of the deposits that can appear on skin.

  • Hi sorry to hear sbout your mum . I was in on carbusistine fir 6-7 weeks ti reduce mucus I was lucky I didn't have a cough sorry

    I had tonsil cancer.
