Playing 'chicken' with steroids - Dexamethasone

Back to my favourite chemotherapy game today... Just How Late Can I Take Dexamethasone And Still Sleep Tonight?

Oh the joys of when you need to eat before taking the drugs but you don't feel up to eating, so breakfast becomes 11:30, then you're not sure how soon after you can take another dose, although you don't feel like eating lunch anyway. :D

We certainly have to work our brains on this journey!

Anyway, just figured others may have encountered this humorous experience.  Or maybe everyone is better at forcing breakfast down at a reasonable hour than I am?

Happy Friday everyone... whether it be because you're off work this weekend, or if you're not at work maybe you get to see all the people that have been working all week.

  • Hi there,

Not exactly the same but it's been interesting watching my mum take control of my dads drugs when she finds it difficult enough to organise making a sandwich!

It has been a little bit hit and miss occasionally. Especially in the beginning. She told me to give him paracetamol and ibuprofen last week. So I did, then when I double checked the book shed written it down in shed given it to him 2 hours earlier. So I had a bit of a freak out and told dad my mother had instructed me to over dose him. Luckily he saw the funny side and accepted my apology for trying to kill him but I never listen to my mum now, I always check first.

Dad got prescribed those dexy things but refused to take them because they made him "wired". I think he takes prednisone instead now plus anti anxiety pills and a sleeping tablet. I don't know if you need to try something different? I cannot stand not being able to sleep-like now, 6.23 and I've been up an hour!! Not good.

    Take care anyway!!!!

  • When my wife first came out of hospital I went into full Nurse Ratchet mode as she was on a four-hourly drug regime including Oromorph. I ended up setting the alarm, waking her, giving her food and drink, giving her the meds then we’d both go back to sleep for 3 hours and 30 minutes and then repeat.

Luckily that only lasted for about a week as I was working during the day - dashing home at lunchtime to do my drugs round.

She got her revenge a few months later when I was on chemo!

    Happy Days! Lol

  • Oh no!

Please if I ever need intensive home care do NOT leave my mother in charge!!! Heart in right place wears a bit thin when she's attempting direct assassination attempts on my dad on a daily basis! Mum was outside talking to a neighbour when I pulled up yesterday. I could see smoke coming from the kitchen door and when I got inside my dad was frantically waving some burnt toast around. He dropped the butter, dropped the cheese, my mum had put the toast on then gone out chatting and he thought he could salvage the situation but no! Aaaww it's funny but it's not. I made him a fruit salad then because he has recently started eating again and mum said that was a good idea and she would never have thought of that?????!!!!!My mind blows daily with those two!!!

    Yes [@davek]‍ happy (ish) days!!!

  • Lol - we should write a book!

After my FIL came out of hospital my MIL who has Alzheimers said they didn’t need help because he was managing her meds for her and keeping to the schedule given to them by the GP.

The district nurse asked him to bring the pills “so I can check which ones she’s on”. He went to get them then came back empty handed 5 minutes later and asked where she kept them! By that time they’d both forgotten that they’d said he was managing her meds and couldn’t understand why she was arranging for a carer to come in to check they were both taking their pills.

  • Haha! I know! That would be some book!!

My dad was really upset yesterday. My eldest son is in uni so he visits my parents every Saturday. Only a week is too long for dad to wait so it seems. He told my eldest daughter that Zak had better turn up today as three times now he'd said he was coming and hadn't bothered! She obviously got really defensive (adores her brother) and told him straight that every time Zakky says he's coming he does. So dad said "well two times then!" She said "No!  Never Gramps!" So I flew out the door when Zak arrived and told him to be prepared. Then he came in and mum said oh good you're here can you make the coffee?!!!!! I said mum it's Zak! And she said "Oh you make the coffee then!" So Zak sat down and my dad said "And where have you been then?!!!" OH MY GOD!! HEELLLP me [@davek]‍  !!!!!!!!! Xxxxx

  • they should be taken no later than 6pm I have just checked the label on my box!!

  • Certainly hope it's only once you experience it.

I get insomnia anyway so when avoiding it is within my control I feel an obligation to :D  Seems irresponsible to do otherwise.

Never been good at eating in the morning though.

  • Hello, It is just me popping in to say "Hello" and wanting to know how you are doing.  I am house hunting (in an area more than a hundred miles from where I currently live) and am wondering how to fit a three bedroom house into the two bedroom bungalow I am seeking.  But my problems are neither here nor there and I just wanted to let you know you are still somewhere in my currently-muddled mind.  Annie
