Radiotherapy - ringing bell at end of treatment

I know this is silly given the magnitude of cancer and it’s treatment but at my radiotherapy session today a patient finished her treatment and all the staff came out to cheer as she rang the bell. It was really emotional for all but I recoiled in horror as it’s something I would hate to do.

Is it compulsory? Do the staff ask beforehand? It’s been worrying me all day. I’m now dreading my final session. Again apologies for being petty.

  • I'm pleased you're being positive. It is a battle and so traumatic but you sound to be coping well. I'm sure your treatment will be successful. I have triple nagative breast cancer and have had a mastectomy and am hopeful the radiotherapy will prevent a recurrence. Sending love.

  • I agree with all the comments.

However, at my cancer hospital the bell in my opinion is situated in the wrong place. I agree with the sentiments of the commencement of your new journey and you deserve it. THe bell at my cancer hospital is in an are where there are patients waiting for scans and to see their consultants. the bell is great but some times at an appropriate time where you can celebrate properly with friends are families. for some patients its not good cause patients are still running the journey and still have their worries.Good Luck to all bell ringers.

  • Hi magpiemaggie,

Just coming up on this thread,

Im wiith you on this one chemo myself and very much alone also, and personally I dont or won't be doing it, i think it's very unfair on other patients and we don't know what stage there at or it's even curable for some people, my best friend's sister got to do it after her radiotherapy, it was heart breaking as she and her family was told there was no hope, but t they asked her to ring the bell and nurses cheared  your journey has just begun,it was heartbreaking, she passed soon after,

    Ange!

  • Hi tyson02,

I'm also have small cell lung cancer, have have 4 chemotherapy and scans came back last week that chemo is killing the cancer,I was diagnosed September just gone so it's been a roller coaster of emotions, picking up infections, magnesium and potassium always low,

I'm finding my mental health is getting the bashing during all this,so glad to see your being positive,

I'm wishing you the best of luck going forward,

    Angie,x

  • My sister will be ringing the bell shortly when her cancer treatment ends..She cannot wait and neither can I..Its been a long time coming ..I will be there ready with my phone to capture this precious moment..So very happy for her

  • I think you're being ridiculous and like a child saying I don't want to do this  -  everyone has their own take on it but me personally I can't wait to ring the bell at the end of my treatment

  • Excuse me!!!!! Exactly everyone has their own take on it. So being rude years later is no help to anyone.

  • Hi there I hope you're well  :)

I've just read your question and I'm pretty sure it's a personal choice. We have a bell at the unit I was having my treatment, and I was in 2 minds about ringing it when I first started chemo as I don't really like the attention, the feeling of eyes on me, but on the other hand I think it's good to have something to mark theend of such a physical and emotional journey. The only reason I ended up not ringing the bell, was because it turned out that the chemo I was receiving didn't work so I needed further treatment.

I'm pretty sure that it's your choice, and the nurses etc will respect your decision whatever you choose.

    Stay safe, stay well  :)

  • Hi, I just finished my treatment today for breast cancer

, i would have liked to ring the bell as been told by friends how it felt like final phase, helped them move on. However when came out from finishing my final treatment, there was noone around no staff to ask as wasnt sure what to do as no-one had mentioned it,  so just put my gown on the desk and left

I feel really cheated as my friends said that the staff all clapped and wished them the best and during my traement i had witnessed a number of people doing it and had clapped. Really upset me as wasnt given the same opportunity x
