Radiotherapy - ringing bell at end of treatment

I know this is silly given the magnitude of cancer and it’s treatment but at my radiotherapy session today a patient finished her treatment and all the staff came out to cheer as she rang the bell. It was really emotional for all but I recoiled in horror as it’s something I would hate to do.

Is it compulsory? Do the staff ask beforehand? It’s been worrying me all day. I’m now dreading my final session. Again apologies for being petty.

  • Hi I'm having my last rads today and am nervous about ringing the bell as don't like drawing attention to myself! My husband is coming with me today and wants to record it and my daughters who can't come want to see that.  Perhaps I'll do it for than as they have been through it all with me and are feeling very pleased to think I'm on the last lap.  I'll let you know if I manage to do this or just walk out quietly. xx

  • Try and do it for yiu your famiky and others satbwaiting some might be in first day if treatment and it might help them to see people can get through it. Of course it’s up to you ,best wishes Hazel xx

  • Thank you Hazel. I rang the bell!  I have the photo to show my family and friends and would love to think it did encourage others to see the end does come.  I felt very emotional. I still have 6 monthly infusions of Zoledronic Acid but Its hopefully onwards and upwards from now xx

  • Hi Hazel

Im so pleased to hear you are doing so well and living life to the full. I'm still feeling unsure about the future after the shock of my breast cancer diagnosis in September and mastectomy in October.  Now my radiotherapy is finished I shall try to do what you're doing and put the last few months behind me and enjoy life again. I'm still a bit in shock at the moment I think.

  • Hi

just wondering do you ring the bell after all your treatment is finished I finish my radiotherapy on 31/1/20 that will be 30 in total I have another 2 rounds of chemo to go so finish my last one on 26/2/20 I spoke to the nurse and she has said ring it at the end of your radiotherapy and your chemo not sure if anyone else has done this .

    thank you

  • Hi,

Yes! Ring that bell at the end of your radiotherapy! Coming to the end of 30 rounds is worth celebrating and it will be a psychological finish to that for you. You are doing so well getting through your treatment. Take it a day at a time and make your first goal ringing that bell on the 31st. Please let me know how you're doing.

  • Hi usually st the end of Radiotherapy but nothing to stop you at end of chemotherapy as well. I had 35 radiotherapy sessions for tonsil cancer and I rung the heck out of it

    thank you x

  • I'm pleased you're being positive. It is a battle and so traumatic but you sound to be coping well. I'm sure your treatment will be successful. I have triple nagative breast cancer and have had a mastectomy and am hopeful the radiotherapy will prevent a recurrence. Sending love.

  • I agree with all the comments.

However, at my cancer hospital the bell in my opinion is situated in the wrong place. I agree with the sentiments of the commencement of your new journey and you deserve it. THe bell at my cancer hospital is in an are where there are patients waiting for scans and to see their consultants. the bell is great but some times at an appropriate time where you can celebrate properly with friends are families. for some patients its not good cause patients are still running the journey and still have their worries.Good Luck to all bell ringers.
