  • Hi Noda,

I'm so glad you asked this instead of just going with the myth.

It is a very popular myth created by people that have read some pseudoscience but don't understand enough real science to comprehend what it is they have read.

The fact is that ALL cells in your body are reliant on glucose (blood sugar) for energy.  And, of course, all cells need energy!  However, that sugar does not speed up the growth of cancer cells.

It isn't entirely a black and white issue, after all obesity does increase your risk of cancer, and you're more likely to be obese if you consume more sugar.  There are also some studies into specific genetic cancers and their relationship with sugar, but none of those are as simple as "starve yourself of sugar and you'll help your cancer".

As you're probably aware cancer is an incredibly complex set of diseases, hundreds of different ones at that, so when people say "do this to cure cancer" or "this causes cancer" the first question should be "which specific cancer?"  If they can't give you an answer then that's the first clue that they don't understand what they are talking about.

People are well-meaning but very misguided and even for scientists like my husband and I, both of whom are fairly well-read on cancer, there is a whole library of stuff out there we still need to learn on the subject.

If anything, just focus on the fact that in general excess sugar isn't good for your body anyway.  With or without cancer you're going to feel your best with a healthy diet.

I hope that helps somewhat?  You have enough going on with a horrible relapse, and some sugar here and there can be good for the soul!  That's just as important.

Hope the Brentuximab helps you out and the relapse subsides soon.

    Take care,

    LJx
