Now HER2+

So my surgeon's famous last words were "Sometimes cancer goes from HER2+ to HER2- but it almost never goes the other way."

Well it has.  So with radiotherapy still not happening until my seroma settles I now have oncology next week to discuss a year of Herceptin.

There is good news though.  I had a rash develop on my reconstructed breast just days before Christmas that was potentially metastases, which would have been a bit too quick for my liking to be honest.  All the breast specialists were off island at the same time so no-one could check it until today.  Surgeon is happy that it isn't metastases, just a shame I couldn't have found that out before Christmas!

  • Hi Jolamine,

Seroma is going down slowly but surely.  It might still delay radiotherapy a bit but won't affect going onto Herceptin.  I believe they can last up to a year, even though most go down quite quickly and don't even need drained post-hospital, so I guess mine hasn't lasted that long in relative terms.  I can get most of my clothes on okay over it so that's cool.

The appointment did give me a giggle.  But I can head off to hospital and then go back and just stay late as I'll be working 9-5 initially but normally it's shift work and as I'm training I can stay late to do some training.  Only back for 3 days before my rostered 3 days off so not too worried about overdoing it.  Then it's into the normal 6 days on 3 days off roster though so I'll need to be making sure I don't overdo it at that point.

  • Hi Marlyn,

Bodies certainly are weird and wonderful, as is cancer, such a clever set of diseases, quite remarkable really, just a shame they harm us.

Thanks for your kind words, it is really appreciated.  Just had to explain the whole HER2+ thing to my mother-in-law and that upset her, which then upset me, so your words cheered me up :)

  • Hi LJ,

What the heck?! You don’t half have some twist and turns on that roller-coaster ride of yours!

Your post puzzled me and pushed me into Googling - I stumbled across this www.breastcancer.org/.../20120620 - I guess we learn something new every day!

Happy New Year - I hope it is a less turbulent one for you!

    Dave :-)

    Hi Twin Two,

I'm glad to hear that your seroma is going down, albeit taking its' time to do so. I had two visits back to hospital to get mine drained post-op, but it cleared up after that.

6 on 3 off sounds pretty arduous to me. Please be careful not to overdo things and set yourself back.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
