Immuno therapy

Hullo everyone, this my first post.  I was very impressed by the range of questions, what seemed to be very helpful answers and the friendliness of this forum.

Having been diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2017 I was given a course of chemo therapy followed by one of radio therapy.  Sometime later I had a ct scan the result of which showed that a tumour on the right lung had greatly reduced and also showed dead tissue, the left lung which previously had a small tumour had now disappeared.  Sometime later a scan showed the cancer on both lungs had returned and I was given immuno therapy.  Unfortunately, half way through, treatment was stopped as my thyroid gland had been very damaged, resulting in some awful reactions.  The latest is a very painful leg which has  resulted in in sleepless nights as the pain occurs when lying down.  Is this, and the other reactions, the result of an underactive thyroid gland or the effect of the therapy.

I would be grateful for comments from those who have been on immuno therapy.

  • Hi Jofin.. The problem is none of us are specialists in each type of treatment so it really should be a question for medical professionals.   All I can suggest is that you ask for a blood test at the surgery as you may have aneamia, this caused my Hubby problems including legs and arm pain.  He had a blood transfusion which helped a lot.   So the sooner you get it checked the better.   Good luck.   Carol

  • Hi Jofin!

I get Immun Therapy now for 3 years, with Nivulumab...my Thyroids started playing up around a year after starting, i am on tbletts now for this. But it took a while to get it sorted, had hot flashes, then was cold and sweaty, put 10 kilo on, had muscle pain and and and...but now after they found the right dose all is fine. Sure sometimes ist still playing up a bit but i get my blood tested for this every fortnight to sort it.

The immun therapy has given me a nearly normal life, after first the doc did give me 10-12 months...but see i'm still well and alive!!!

  • Hi

my hubby is hopefully starting immunotherapy in two weeks. We forgot to ask if you can go to work ok whilst having the treatment. It’s for a year every other week. Would you have any advice or share your experience. Thanks.

  • Hullo,

As I said in my original post the immuno therapy was discontinued and at present I am back on chemo therapy. I am just at the end of the treatment which started on 10 December last and will know the effect of the treatment in a couple of weeks.  I am retired so the question of being able to work didn’t arise.  Whilst immuno therapy didn’t agree with me, be assured there are numerous cancer patients who are benefitting from it.

I do hope it works for you husband and wish you both the very best.

  • I did go to work as usual on Immuno Therapy, as the side effects for me have been okay.
