Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

Thank you. I will do that

  • Totally understand what you're saying and I understand nutrition and the need for the high calories, but these are 30% sugar which has no nutritional value whatsoever. It isn't cholesterol that I'm concerned about, it's diabetes, the doctor has already said the  treatment would likely raise glucose levels, so why on earth are they then giving food supplements to patients adding to that risk.

I'm currently doing my own research, and I'll speak to the dietician next week about it, there will be alternatives to get these high calorific and fortified supplements in to him to avoid weight loss, without feeding ultra processed highly sugared ones like this. My only concerns is how it can be done without risk a blockage in tube, but I'm certain there'll be away. I've already contacted some places that do much better options, I guess we'll just have to pay for them.

    I'll keep you posted.

  • Would think smoothies go through the tube, Hazel? It sounds brutal - did you get BG tube fed at all? Hubby has his already in place now, ready for if he can't swallow later.

  • Thank you, Hazel. Your advice has been invaluable.

  • Hi no we are told under no circumstances to put our own feeds in via the tubes as the consistency can’t be guaranteed not to block. Inhad ng tube fitted end if week 3 and I removed it with nurses permission and if week 3 recovery. I continued to sip orally the ensure s until I could maintain calories orally a few weeks I was on 50/50 ensures. My feeding tube I had a rucksack which a pump was fitted in ti and my bags of feed were provided by Fresnius and ti be hinest the weee well balanced and gave me suffice t nutrients ti make an uneventful recover y. My blog might help you see my progression;  I flew to Spain week 8 for 3 weeks. I’ve had no issues with blood sugars or Cholesterol  which is 2.8 The feeding tube as my lifesaver treatments brutal enough without trying to eat as well. Honestly I thought I could eat through treatment as my oncologist did but I woke one morn8ng and couldn’t even eat a poached egg.
then I knew it was time for the tube to be fitted my trust doesn’t routinely fit the tummy peg

    hioe this helps.

  • Hi the times are you’re  looking at is t forever. Although I do know 3 people with laryngeal cancer who are permanently fed via tubes and one lady who is she bought a vitamin machine but sometime has issues. I coukd eat more or less normall6 out end of week 3 as I say I then started to eat week 3 of recovery admittingly not healthy eating urban calories by any means to maintain weight.  Really it hard to describe the act if being unable to swallow alongside the treatment daily for 7 weeks with chemo thrown in. By the end of treatment I slept for almost 2 weeks with hubby changing my feeding bags and doing the require ph tests and stringing water in between feeds.
some people manage to eat but loose a lot of weight which then affects recovery it’s a balance.

  • Thanks again, Hazel. I understand what you're saying and as I said that is the main concern, however, the dietician said it is possible to put other supplements down the tube as long as it's been passed by them.

So what I'm meaning is these particular supplements that have been sent to my hubby are 30% sugar and that is not well balanced whatever way you look at it - of course, they're meant to be calorific as to help keep weight on, but these calories should come from protein and good fats, etc. not 30% from pure sugar. Do you see what I'm saying. I'll take a look at the Ensure ones you took, it's quite possible your ones were well balanced to do the job, but these particular ones are not.

It's great to hear how well you're doing and living a good life, it gives much hope that life will be normal again. It does sound brutal along the way though.

  • Just to clarify, are you saying you got tube fitted Week 3 of treatment - but 3 weeks after end of treatment you were able to eat/swallow some food by mouth? That's great to hear.

  • Hi yes my trust didn’t routinely fit the tummy pegs but at consent time I signed to say if I needed a ng tube ( mask tube inti tummy I would have one. I literally went overnight from being able to eat to not. My poor hubby cooked 9 eggs for me on the Sunday from poached ti boiled and bit one could I eat. I was and still am very pro active regarding treatment hence why I’m still helping others 7 years later. We had booked flights for week 8 recovery and positive mental attitude got me on that aircraft minus any feeding tubes. I took ensures with me and protein powder. Don’t get me wrong I could eat a 3 course meal but we have our own place there so that was easier. In agreement with nurses I was deemed well enough week 3 of recovery to take the tube out. But it was my lifesaver it enabled me to make a good recover. Ok the drinks are not healthy but they did their job.
    hugs Hazel x

  • Awww thank you, Hazel, big hugs back - it's amazing your still here supporting us all after all this time.

Great to hear that the tube can, and does, come out - I think it's one of the things he's disliked the most - but as with all these things it'll be 'take your pick' lol
