Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi everyone update from me. 31 August 2023 marks my 5 year since treatment finished. Just thought I would pop a post on for everyone. I I don’t know who if anyone will read these posts years to come. Life does go on after cancer diagnosis some ways it’s been a long five years and then otherwise it’s gone in a flash if I have been able to help some people along the way that’s good and I’m always here if anybody wants to ask any questions I’ve now been discharged from hospital Feel a bit like in the  umbilical cord has been cut  but knew it was going to happen but I did shed a tear  on my last consultation so onwards and upwards  from here. I’m off on my bike shortly in the sun. . I hope everyone’s had a decent summer and keep in touch

    hugs Hazel

  • Hi my husband is 7 days post radiotherapy of 30 sessions he's tired cannot eat any solid food living on meal shakes supposed to have 7 a day most we've achieved in a day is 6 today its been 3. Any hints and tips please?

  • Hi Jayne best advice I can give is a he has  to concentrate on taking the shakes. It’s too early for him to even think about solid food but it doesn’t need for calories. Does he have a feeding tube and NG tube or a peg? If so, it must use that if he hasn’t, I have known people be hospitalised at this stage and a tube NG fitted reactively .
le I had 2500 cal each and every day 2 to 3 L of water. This continued approximately 15 months after radiotherapy does take its toll on our bodies and we need calories to help recovery. It’s not easy. I took the mantra that food was fuel. The first 2 to 3 weeks are very difficult my day I slept fed by my tube. Did my oral hygiene repeat I can’t offer any other advice other than it’s got a stick at it otherwise it could well be hospitalised   Protein in the shakes is vital hsve s read my blog it might help  he’s not on his own in feeling like he does

I used to stand at kitchen window aftet my tube was removed snd took 15 mjns to orally swallow one ensure

  • Not on a feeding tube but in another week if things don't pick up I will call his dietician.  Weve no appointments scheduled now apart from phone call in a couple weeks with dietician and 6 weeks phone appt with consultant. He's having 4th shake as I type so 1200 calories so far today.
