Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Thyroid needs bloods taken as up to 60% of us have thyroid issues it needs tests yearly. A simple text and a tablet can right it but without tests yoh eint kniw ask consultant

  • Excuse my ignorance but what does your thyroid got to do with appetite and eating?

  • Hi the thyroid  regulated your metabolic rate snd digestive system , it’s part of the endocrine system so it’s a major factor  in lucky in on the 40% of us whose at the moment is working but radiotherapy side effects can take up to 20 years to manifest

  • Hi amigo, I’m one month behind you , I finished treatment in January this year. As hazel says food is just a fuel now, I take no pleasure whatsoever from meals now but I’m hoping that down the line this might ease up. I know everyone different but I’m taking advice from others on this forum and just trying to eat as best as I can. I drink about 1.5 litres of water with every meal , my taste isn’t too bad but no spiced food , no chilli, nothing but bland bland food and piles of gravy. I know it’s a struggle but as they say it’s better looking down on the daisies than up at them! Tbh where I struggling most is missing my glass of red wine on a weekend. I have weetabix every morning but milk isn’t same ( this is prob only diff) , lunch I can only do hot wrap of some sort as long a melted cheese or mayo , tea is as I say bland food with gravy , no pepper sauce or curry as it burns like billy o! I refuse to start on the shakes again , I just can’t face them. All I can say is mind over matter, listen to others who are ahead of use in terms of the recovery road

  • Hi Brian good to see you replying. It does get better just time which none of us get told. By around 15 month for me I started putting weight on. I had to stop eating cream cakes !!!!  Spicy is still a no no I can make my own curry using g coconut milk and turmeric coriander and cumin. But life is good. I can eat out just be choosy what I pick. Desserts are always good. Don’t dismiss the shakes entirely if I occasionally have a bad day I keep my calories  uo with an ensure.I’m 5 years at end of month the daisy’s are deffo better looking down in them live that analogy.

  • Hazel , cheers, as I say I’m listening to people like yourself who have been there and done it! I’m getting enough cals in to maintain weight . What I do find if I’m late with a meal I loose interes and don’t bother so I’m quite regimental in timings? I’m going to Portugal soon and although I’m looking forward to family holiday for first time since the new me I’m also dreading it. I’ve also a f ily wedding next month which I really don’t fancy but have decided it would ruin my wife’s day if I didn’t go so needs must. I must thank you once again for all your help on this and other forums

  • Hi Brian. Bless you I do it like you say ti help others our cancers are the unknown ones they aren’t the popular ones.  Most people automatically go doen the smoking n Sri kj g thoughts. I’m aiming to educate people about h p v driven tumours as they are certainly on the increase also younger ones in their late 30 s now presenting with HPV driven tumours.
