Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hiya spent ages reading through posts....I'm 3 weeks into radiotherapy and struggling...everyone seems to have got through treatment but I'm having so many issues....really struggling with mucus as feel I'm going to choke or be sick then panic as scared I wont be able to breathe as throat so swollen...can't eat darnt eat as scared be sick and then choke? Help

  • Hi Linda,

Many of us did get through treatment but we all faced simllar issues such as thick musus during treatment. It's unpleasant and one of the unfortunate side effects of radiotherapy.
I found a nebiliser helped a little and used while going through the worst patch. To be honest, it doesnt last too long. I would suggest you speak to your support team, not only to see if they could lend a nebuliser and prescribe some saline, but also talk through your issues. The main concern is not really one of mucus but the fact that you are not eating. Not sure if you have a tube or are on supplement drinks, but you really need to have fuel into your body, one way or other.

Your support team is your best option to resolve with you and they will also be monitiring your weight and side effects. They are wonderful at providing help and solutions and will find a workaround for you.
One other thing I did was buy a diffuser from Amazon and some eucalptus/menthol oil and found that helped me as well.

Not sure if you have read my blog(and Hazel's) but I have posted a link below so can can have a read through at each stage and some helpful tips picked up along the way.

Dont despair too much as mucus is prefectly normal at this stage and trust me, we all had many issues to deal with as well, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. The treatment and recovery period brings many little challenges to work though and there is plenty of support here and from your medical support team to help you though.

Let me know if I can help further in any way or if you have any more questions.

dont suffer in silence there are ways round everything .

the mucus’s is there to protect our throats ,and lets face it the Throat will be taking a battering it’s its own natural lubricant.

keep in touch and good luck

  • Hi Linda everyones case is different a lot depends on what stage you were when diagnosed, your fitness levels, personal mental strength and so on lots of variables. Luckily we have one of the most treatable cancers but the treatment is targeted in an area that has so many things that are effected, saliva, taste buds, muscle tissue,  skin and so on. I was told head and neck are the worst places to receive radiation.

We all had a period that we struggled with I had a bad couple of weeks pretty much this time last year where I couldent swallow without pain, thats where the right painkillers and ways to get nutrients in you come into force, as said already speak to your team.

One of the best tips I could pass is to do the tongue, mouth and neck exercises you were told to do and dont miss a session no matter how fed up you get. keep in touch.
