Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hello all- wishing you all a great Christmas & healthy happy 2020- & CONGRATULATIONS to you all- you have all been so brave & done so well! Joe is doing great (for the record- no scans unless anything dodgey appears, 6 weekly checks-physical feel around neck, nasal scope & look in mouth)

He's back at work-part time-full in new year :-/  .He is still about 3 1/2 stone lighter than he was pre treatment & they say it will take a year to put weight back on- is everyone else similar? As he was a bit overweight before, everyone who sees him says he looks great (BMI probably better now) but he still looks too thin to me- not losing weight so I guess its just time-appetite not what it was due to taste- anyway very lucky & appreciative so am happy-

Anyway Happy Christmas folks-you deserve it & all the best to you all & again-thank you for your support xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • Hi brill news for both of you and good to know plus helps others who may come across the thread. Yes the weight can take time to come back. We don’t eat the same amount of foods in first year well most of us dont. I have out 7 lb on since  treatments finished 16 months ago . Don’t know about Jo but I never really feel hungry any more.

Good luck for future and merry Christmas and gsooy healthy New Year x

    Hazel x

  • Thank you Other Half and nice kind words for everyone.

I;d also like to extend my best wishes to all, no matter where you are on your journey.

Met some lovely people and the community spirit not only helped us all through treatment and recovery but forged some nice friendhships as well, Used to love de coding Hazel's posts bless her (we still keep in touch privately which has been great)

Re weight...proabably normal on balance as weight fluctated before, during and after and now I;ve lost aroud 4 stones and back to a healthy fightlng weight again and a stict healthly diet with no alcohol still that I really enjoy and way of life now and back in new fitting dapper suits.
That said I was eating far too many prawns, sliced salmon. and other fish in my diet and then caused me bad bout of gout which I never seen coming over a bunch of prawns,
Body is such a fickle thiing with age I guess

Sorry guys, there maybe a cure for this diagnosis but I'm not sure if anyone knows how to fix and cure Man Utd anytime soon. Wafrord real low and they all need a slap in the face with a wet fish,

Anyhoo, enjoy your xmas and I will now head of to kitchen to slow cook steak for pie and start organising, before onto turkey.

Swapped xmas presents with Fiona last night and deviated from normal years where I gave her the choice of a lot of money and a little gift or a lot of gifts and little money. She always took the money.
Bought and chose xmas presents this year myself and ..yup..WRONG!...the pretend smile, thats nice, and mmmmmm, why did you choose that oh thanksssssss..I would never thought of that (or bloody chosen )...Never again..Birthday and Xmas is back to money and buy what you like as I guarantee to get it wrong. Is this me or a bloke thing?
i'll check and see if they are on ebay later under unwanted xmas presents.

okayies onwards & upwards for all and have a magical time and a very healthy and prosperous 2020.

    Ian
