Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Hazel

thanks and your reply made me think. He said because over a year ago since diagnosis so 3 mth checks but I didnt stop treatment until November so I recon its 10 months and he has put me on 3 mth checks now.

Strage how there does not seem to be some kind of uified thinking.

Not complaining as its a good sign I guess but still some comfort that we get ongoing checks no matter how good we feel.

    and yup..

    Onwards & Upwards

  • Good Kelly and hope it has....

  • Yayy Ian! Fab news- 1 year on..well nearly so another positive milestone- made my day :-)

  • Great stuff Ian.

Totally different each consultant and each case too i guess. Im 6 months out from last radiotherapy, had 2 consultations there, and one with camera ( but there was never a tumour to see so guess that is why), due more in December

.I have read on other threads and sites the fact that is is variable with ort TNM statuses guiding it. Keep it up pal.

  • Hi Hazel-Hope alls well with you...

Just to let you know our holiday was great! No problems at all, flight was good-tips on water was handy-so thanks for that! Joe could eat & drink pretty much normally- the hangover after the shandys & ouzos wasn't great-but we never have been drinkers so no surprize there-we never learn! Good night though from what I can remember & good to let our hair down after this year....

Oh & snorkelling left Joe feeling a bit dry-which isn't surprizing breathing through a small tube with salt water & sun- we never even thought of that! But no hardship there-he left me to snorkel while he lay in a hammock reading! So all in all a good holiday- Oh & guess what-we got chatting to another couple & the guy also had this cancer- 3 years ago-he's doing ok too so always nice to hear-so as you all say-light at the end of the tunnel :-) x

  • Hi brill news that the holiday worked out well. We sailed to Spain on Tuesday so sat in balcony nibbling crisps which I deffo couldn’t  do a year ago ok takes me 45 mins to get through a 30 gram pack but hey it’s worth it.

Alcohol braver than me haven’t had a drink since April last year like yiu nit a big drinker but don’t think I could manage even a shandy warr is still my drink but one day who knows. Glad hubby eating well it’s always good for other who may pick uo the thread further down the  the line to hear of our success .Christmas dinner the next big hurdle for you copious amounts of food I still can’t easily do a 3 course .

keep in touch love to hear the updates

  • Hi everyone hope you are all doing well Iv just popped in to see whats going on, its looking quiter which is a good sign I hope. Its a year since I had my first symptoms which was a small amount of blood appeared in my mouth. A year on, 8 months post treatment and happy to say Im almost back to square one.

Im eating normally, have the odd curry providing its not too hot which is due the almost back to normal saliva apart from being dry at the back of my throat mainly first thing in the morning, my muscle mass has come back a little more although someone who Iv not seen in a while said my face was thinner which is true, I think this whole experience has aged me a bit but in the grand scheme of things its a small price to pay.

    Next check up Oct 10th.

    Dave

  • HinDave brill news as Ian says onward and upward , sure you haven’t aged coz  we aren’t playing well lol and just blaming the cancer !!
