Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

The Ultra sound bloke today said watch for any lumps or bumps & get it checked asap-if any recurrence happens it's usually within the 1st year so to reach that mile stone is really good- Gives us all hope!

Have a great holiday too! Yes we have everything! Factor 50, lots of various hats with ever increasing brim sizes, those cycling neck scarf things & even bought a little beach tent to provide shade! x

  • Hi yiunwill Ben fine just remember if on any prescription meds take a copy of script with you as well just in case you get asked and chill out and enjoy. Worst part of travelling for me isn’t the time from going into security where my water bottle has to be empty to finding a boots or WH Smith aid side quickmtip takes a 100 mil travel bottle withnunid he needs to keep mouth moist ! Then enjoy I also now take 100 mil bottle while travelling with my mouthwash in so can freshen up in loo plus on airpcraft .we are sailing this time so won’t have same problems

h x look forwats to hearing about journey in your return

  • Thanks for the tip about the water! Wouldn't have thought of that! But yes he can't go far or for very long without water so I'll do that-take the a 100ml bottle or 2 with water in it!

Will report back! Hope to book Spain in October too if all goes well with this one-fingers crossed x

  • Hi

Ive recently been diagnosed with throat cancer and am due to start 6 weeks of radiotherapy and 2 sessions of chemo on the 16th of September.

Ive had a good read through this thread to get a better idea of what’s to come! Everyone’s posts have been so helpful to prepare me and I now feel I know the best and worst case scenario with the treatment.

I hope to add my journey to this and might even try and blog too!

  • Hi Kelly,

Am sorry to hear of your diagnosis but I keep saying there is light at the end of the tunnel and although its a challenging treatment/recovery you do get through it and come out the other end.

Glad you found the thread helpful and have a read of my blog along with Hazels as we both logged our journeys from the get go. Hopefully you will pick up some insight and awareness of potential road ahead as well as some positive tips.

Stay stong and we are only a message away. Happy if you even want to PM and 1:1.

Please let us know if we can help in anyway

  • Hi all

    Holiday Tip/Insurance

Obviously not for everyone but thought I would pass on.

Cut long story short, I'm feeling healthier than ever and bit the bullet and booked my beloved Las Americas, Tenerife for next year.
Graeme - get practising as I'll be coming to one of your gigs.

Was given a strong recommendation for insurance re cover and cost by colleague who has used and in similar circumstances and you can go online and have a look or phone

Again not for all but if helps even one we always book package holiday well in advance and via Jet2 holidays. They give out vouchers for £60 off next holiday and you can pick up a code from ebay for £0.99p then apply it to your final invoice to activate the £60 discount. Code sent within minutes to apply.

    thought I'd mention

Remember to drink plenty water !

  • Hi Hazel and Ian

Yeah certainly not a club I wanted to be in but hey ho! Your blogs have certainly helped me process things a bit better.

I have my appointment on Monday to get my mask fitted and then it’s just the waiting game till I start treatment on the 16th Sept.

The hardest thing for me is going to be staying away Monday to Friday. I’m 36 and have a husband and two girls (13 and 6) but hopefully time will pass quickly for us all! I am being treated in Edinburgh but stay just under two hours away which is why I will have to stay.

Looking to go back to work on Tuesday after my mask fitting for some normality although some folk have said I’m crazy!
