Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Evening lovely people THURSDAY UPDATE

29/33 fractions done 4 to go! Yey

Weight : Maintained Lots of full fat puddings , jelly , ice cream , porridge , soft fish , mash pots etc . I think he has been lucky as he hasn’t lost his taste buds .

Neck area . Very red and angry sore & cracking just in the Adam’s apple area.  Flamigel RT applied all the time nice and cold from the fridge . Silver cream will be given next week once treatment ends .

Inside of mouth and throat : very very sore , the constant cough doesn’t help this also makes him feel sick . Nebuliser loaned from hospital today with saline solution .

oral thrush found in mouth . More meds for that .

Pain constant if not kept on top of . From tonight he is having slow release morphine 2 times a day with oral morphine in between . Gargling with salt water several times a day . And mouth wash AM& PM .

Spirits .... Medium but peaked last night to and all time high when TOTTENHAM won ! Back down to medium now and from today has decided not to go into the office .

This is what my husband is experiencing with his treatment so far  as some of you know is T1 N0 M0 of the vocal chord .

I hope those of you going through the treatment ATM are doing ok and keeping your spirits up & those of you who have come out the other side thank you for always being there for us .

    Hugs Ginny. . X x Excuse any typos x

  • Hi Joy oh well fingers x but if things change they will do it . 6 days and now then radiotherapy over just keep it in your mind that hubby may want to get back to normal quickly but it still takes time for all the radiation to leave our bodies ,some drs say 10/14days ! So far I haven’t been in touch with anyone who has been that lucky .i use this phrase a lot your body is like a radiator and the radiation has to leak out slowly .Drinks lots if water and a gentle walk  maybe rounds the garden to start without baby steps, we are all with you through this challenging time.

On a positive note just back from ENT consultant camera up the nose and all looking as it should plus no signs of any reoccurrence down there. Plus he commented in Hiw fit and healthy I was looking. So onward and uowards

  • Great Ginny and sounds by and large coping and managing well.
Glad on slow release morphine and topped by oral morph when needed. Always said if painkillers needed then there is a solution and should be taken. Well in my view.

Only 4 to go so at least treatment ends soon and let hope recovery is not too bad.
Really good that weight being maintained at this stage and able to eat well. Also lucky no loss of tatste buds.

All in all, and in the main, all pretty normal at thi stage and would say he is doing remarkably well considering.

Footie this week has set off lots of pulses lol !

  • Hi Ginny Good news the weight ,keep it up. Oral thrush is very common I am still getting it from time to time it’s our lack of saliva that to blame. Neck don’t worry about it it just anither side effect if you look at my blog you will see at the end if August how bad my neck was a 3 rd degree burn and same full length of side of my tongue. But now you can hardly tell on neck apart from the red thread veins that it’ left me with. On a positive notes. Ent today camera up the nose and consultant delighted with how ut was looking and no reoccurrence of anything down there. Painkillers take them he will need them see my other post for what I was taking. Baby steps Hazel. Xx
