Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

    Hi TFS

Our team advised my husband to put nothing on the areas of skin affected by the radiotherapy, just stick with pain relief.  I did look at aloe gel, but came across something about aloe latex - he has a latex allergy so thought best to steer clear...

It took about 7 to 10 days to settle, did look pretty scabby at its peak (d7 - 10 post treatment) but is fine now.  He does need to keep clothing away from it, has a fine collection of silk scarves now which the girls in the family, me included, will be fighting over when no longer needed!!  Interestingly the mouth symptoms peaked about a week after, thankfully now appear to have settled too.

Hope all is now ok for you

  • Hi j4

  • Hi J4

Speaking of silk scarves for neck I have a selection of soft neckerchief/neckwarmers for when I go out.
My neck wasnt too bad really but I still like to cover up when I go out.

Ive put a link onto site . One i have linked to are the best I have come across and nice soft silky feel and perfect fit as not too tight or too loose.
Also reduced in sale so good bargain (middle one reduced to £8.78) but if you type in neckerchief then neckwarmeer you will see the full range if you want others, but I swear by La Sportiva dedalus tubes.
Under armour from amazon is another good one I bought that I would recommend.

  • OHi

I am using fsctor  50 on nd o mixed with a factor 30 false tan from consum so that neck blends in with rest  of body p. Still in Spain as you know cycling and walking every day .just protecting rest of body as usual with factor 50. Also havecseldction if scarfs neck buffs . I had 3 rd degre burn and burn dressings in fir 5 weeks touch wood neck ok. I have a red blotch which will never go as my oncologist said when I look in mirror will remind me of him it has a name telenguasia or something like that basically the blood vessels under skin that took full blast have widened and will remain like that. But have even exposted body in bikini I know hold the though Lol but sat under parasol on beach am living my life as oncologist told me to .

  • They look good, thanks for the tip

  • Hi Laura

great news that Mick is slowly improving and even better yiu managed a few days away brill

thecsaliva issue is still my worst symptom 8 month on but I find chewing gum sugar free really helps to stimulate thecsaliva glands into action. Yiu need one with xylitol as opposed to sorbitol , Holland and Barrett do one try ut it nay be a bit string atv7 weeks but worth a try.

Also get dr or dentist to prescribe biogenesis gel tonrub in gums and bio xtra dryvas a mouth wash rinse I still use those before bed every night niw sleep most of niggtvapart from wake up to sip water maybe once or twice but straight back to sleep.

Agree gravy and sauces become your best frien for quite a while. We are still in Spain am biking and walking biked over 400 km and walked over 200 km since we’ve been here. Just use factor 50 on my neck so make sure yiu have it in ready for summer

    take care

  • Hi all

little update and probably draw line under re updates and just leave to others to post on how you are all progressesing either here or on other threads, but as started thread come full circle and wanted to record for my blog as well.

I have taken a little longer to recover than anticipated but i've been back to support team and on action plan. Been on this for 2 weeks now and cut long story short feel million times better and progressed really quickly in a short space of time. Ive probably just needed that discipline and structure to kick start again and trick body.
I log what i eat but am back to eating what i like and am eating regular meals with ease and fully enjoying.
Am totally off motphine and back on my normal codine, which I needed for back anyhoo pre preatment, so again another bonus.
Sleep wise, havnt totally solved but Im sure thats just matter of time and with fuel getting in now and offf morphine that should help fatigue and sleep pattern.
Was signed off work for next 3/4 weeks to fully concentrate on recovery and not have any stress/clutter and appointment with work occupational health to have a phased work plan when I go back.

Seeing speech therapist Monday and Wellbing clinic next thursday for whole of support team then consultant early May.

Long journey but starting to see much inroads finally and thank you all who have supported and helped.throughout.

Hope I find you all well no matter where you are on your own journeys.

Will update my blog and will post link here for last time on this thread.
