Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Thank you I wanted to see him more often as I really got in well with him. But he emailed me the other day which was nice ,he’s put me forward as a mentor for new people. Plus he is using my blog as a teaching tool which makes me really proud.

Re eating ditto I always finished first but now it John by a long way ,although no longer taking 45 mins like in the early days. I really read my blog the other day pretty scary what we’ve been through and your brain blocks some of it out was onky when I re read it brought it back

    enjoy weekend

  • Hi Hazel,

Well for my sins I just knuckled down today and literally just finished my internet blog.
Not to self congratulate but i'm really pleased I did it and again found it therapeutic not only to do, but to see more joined up and being able to read back on my journey. My partner hasnt really been on this site so she thought it was really good to see.I may have missed bits out or missed tips but i can always amend/update once it comes to mind.

Again I'd like to share the blog with others to help and although format is slightly different to your own blog, the overall messages/treatment effects etc are still basically the same.

Would love for you ( and others if they choose ) to have a read and see what you think
You mentioned both of us putting each others link on both our blogs and think its a good idea but I wanted to have you read first and didnt want to just put your link on mine without your final ok.
I'm happy for you to put my link on your blog now and if you are happy enough for me to do same let me know and I will put your blog link into mine. Link is below.

Thanks for the likes and have now updated mine and put your blog link in so hopefully you will get even more views.
It under Tips section and header Articles to read

I wasnt as brave as you and didnt want so many pics of me online ( might get women distracted as I'm so handsome lol ). Nah i just wasnt as confident as you but I like how your blog is more visual.
Thats a great idea on being a mentor and your right, its good to put something back and help others.

I didnt understand what you meant re investors treatment finished and thrown to lions? maybe the nuances of site and spell and grammar check lacking.

and I think after reading my blog I have got to your sub conscious and you are away on a retail shopping spree now lol !!!.you certainly remembered that one quick..good on you and you totally deserve and are such a wonderful person.

Another good day for Ole yesteray. Hope they stop phapping around and give him the job soon.

    Have a great day

    ian x

  • Thank you Laura

Please keep us posted with Mick's progress and hope the side effects are kept to a minimum.
Also hope his fuel intake has stabalised.
I doi like your positive mindset of looking to better times as although all the side effects are debilitating right now, they are only temporary.

  • Hi ian typos rule on this site. Meant to say maybe we should be watched a little closer when treatment finishes as opposed to being thrown to the lions and left to find our own ways. Typical example is reducing painkillers I had been in them that long didn’t know whether I was in pain or not a but like you.

Thank you re comments about mentoring I really want to give something back ,I enjoy being vocal if you hadn’t guessed already. Go on put a photo on dare you. Lol I really didn’t mind putting my photos on especially the ones where my neck was really bad ,I used all the creams but as dr said later he always knew that would happen along with my radiation tongue burn but why worry me unnecessary.

yep Ole deffo working his magic just hope they see sense and give him the job .

re shopping was  very restrained onkyb2 pairs of shorts n a bikini judtbin case the weight goes back on

  • Hi Hazel

oh I get you now and totally agree. I have , as you know, been reducing morphine dose on my own without any guidance, and it was me who mentioned to consultant and team. Not complaining but I also get quite a lot of oramorph on repeat and no real checks are made into what I'm taking.
Same with Ensures - when getting treatment they were on my case all the time, but now treatment over, fuel intake is pretty much down to me.I admit I have lost further weight here and Ive not even been taking 4 the past few days. Maybe its something we can both bring up as feedback.Last time I got weighed before meeting I had my Timerland boots on and big jacket.!
Like you I want to put something back in some shape or form and will discuss with team how best I can do that. At least the blog is a start, but Id like to do more

Shoppiing - tut tut lol...you cant shop just in case and should be a little more bratish and think that  treats are vital ! but assume by the shorts and bikini you are getting ready for your latest jaunt abroad.

    take care

    ian x

  • Hi Ian

yes they certainly are 2 weeks today we will just have docked in Santander for our long stay hoping 10 weeks. Have promised consultant if I feel any twinges we will fly home it’s oniy 2.5 hours so he has said live my life and fully intend doing.

Re getting weighed I’ve had big boots on fleece puffa jacket phone in pocket hat n gloves n scarf as well   Butvagree during treatment it’s sll about weight then after wards it’s up to us.

I have already mentioned to Macmillan team and they agree not enough is done for hnc after care but budgets override everything.

Just in planning stages for charity bike ride in July me n one of guy s whi did treatment with me and our other half’s. Will post info later xx

take the bush tuckrrvdrinks my friend x
