Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

will pass my oncologist s words in to you this cancer is the worst if all cancers to treat the mouth and neck are used by out bodies 24 hours a day eat drink sleep but in a plus side we have the best chance of recovery. That’s what I am doing as I type this in Spain living.

I couldn’t drink plain tap or mineral water for almostb2 months but I had a feedeingbtube and Jihn put that through  my tube younvpcan domthensame withbthe oeg make a cup of tea put honey in ut he can’t taste it but uts ex calories.

one guy who was being treated same time as me thus isn’t easy tinsay needed uo dangerously ill due to dehydration his kidneys were hours from failing  he onky needs sips through his mouth to keepmswallow fiction inended uo only on soda water but it worked

please please get liquid into him  I Lost 2 stone and am inkyn5 foot I wasn’t taking 5/6 ensures he will need his strength as treatmentbis tough and he needs to be strong for the recovery phase

  • My voice is ok, a small patch on the back of my neck is affected regards hair loss but nothing to worry about, no beard growth under my chin now and its a little patchy on my face but I assume it will return.

  • Hi Dave!! Thanks for your reply!! That's interesting using the swimmers nose!! So if you hold your nose you can't taste something disgusting?.... interesting! I'll suggest that tomorrow.

  • Thank you for your reply Ian! I was overwhelmed by all the responses! My partner had a low BMI to start with and now weighs 60kg with clothes and shoes on, so you can imagine he's like a skeleton (almost 6ft). Well he had 3 ensures into his PEG today and a bit of water. Hopefully the dietician knocks some sense into him on Monday.  He's looking very frail.

  • Hi Hazel. Well done on the all clear!! Thank you for your reply and advice. I'm wondering if they might keep him in on Monday as he's very underweight and looks very frail (but only 46). Don't worry about scaring me, it's all very important stuff that needs to be taken seriously. Good idea about tea and honey. He tried green tea today, that was disgusting too.

  • Thanks for your reply Laura. I'll have to buy some sparkling water, although he tends to hate that at the best of times!! Also he's always hated soups and shakes and she to crohns disease is quite fussy. Thanks for the encouragement.

  • My partner hasn't lost hair on his head but his stubble hasn't grown. Today I actually thought he'd shaved whilst I was out, no he hasn't shaved for a week and his stubble is sparse. One positive from treatment I guess!

  • Hi Graeme,

No real noticable change to voice apart bit gruff first thing and no real hair loss apart from back of neck hair not growing back in or neckline but nothing noticable..

Note - electric shaver only and no alcohol based gel/cream advised.
