Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Dave and Julie

  • Just kidding re klopp hazel and I know yr a MU fan lol

YourBlog and reason not selfish at all and totally get that. I started this thread as soon I as knew and as I have said many times, it was to help at least one person but in the main was to record my  journey and my progress warts and all and its been very therapeutic for me so I guess I have been selfish all along as well then, It still is my rationale for doing this.

However i'd like to think all of us have pulled together, contributed and helped one another especially as we are all at different stages and often have different symtoms at different stages.

  • Hazel how long does it take to get the results after the scan?

    Dave

  • HHi Dave if it’s a pet ct scan usually a week I.e. guybtoday gets his next Monday as I let ct scan needs more time for whatever reason. Wirhbchristmas and new year they had a back log so I knew well in advance mine was 11 days .so just put it out of my mind and compartmentalised it ,with the well it’s done I can’t influence it either way so forget about it and to be honest I did .ok last nights sleep was fractured but that could be dry mouth and apprehension.

I kniw a girl who had an m r I scan as her final scan  different consultant s ask for different scans she had her scan at 11 am waited jn hospital until 1600 consultant read  it and gave her a provisional all clear and said 2 days later will ring you to confirm  which they did and it was. .

my oncologist takes the belt and braces attitude and want the security of the pet ct scan , with it there is a risk if it’s done too early you can get a false positive ie u still have radiation in your system which can affect the scan Hence why I was 16 weeks from finish , I have known m r I scans some at 10 weeks done . Do you know which one you will have .

  • Doc told me i’ll have an examination at 6 weeks camera up the nose etc and scan at 12 weeks, he didn’t say which type of scan.

    Dave

  • Ask him next time you go.would younbelieve I only had a camera up on the 2 nd lovalmloval Ent clinic  Oncologist hasn’t done one he believes in science from the scans , in my case with it being tonsil said the camera wouldn’t tell him anything somwhy put me through it.

Tell yiu one thing it’s a very very strange feeling today m John and I just been talking and we are both the same elated that the cancer has gone but there’s a deflated feeling as well hard to put into words maybe becasue we’ve lived ut day and night since 14 May last year and now it’s gone !!!

    Hazel

  • I think the whole process is a strange experience Hazel, Iv gone from being fighting fit for my age riding bikes, walking, playing football to being hit by a juggernaut, even now months on I can’t accept it fully but I’m in a process of getting me back to normal and doing everything I can to get back to where I was, never thought it would happen to me.

    Dave

  • Ditto if you’ve read my blog we cycled 1100 km lastvMay ok had what turned out to be s lymoh nide with cancer cells in it but I don’t drink don’t smoke n for 61 female fairly fit n get tonsil csncerbfrom h p v 16+ virus. Why us when there’s scores out there that abuse their bodies.  Only saving grace the cure rate is good. Like my oncologist said on first meeting him it’s the cancer he would choose if he had to get one. But the treatment is probably the worst of all as until u can’t use your mouth u have no idea how much it and the tongue do.

Hope u get a good night anyvwuestions justcsdk. Just because I’ve got my results I am still going to help as many as I can for a long time to come . Off to Spain Saturday 19 days gentle bike riding no mountains though all flat
