Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

How do you find the duraphat do you tolerate it ok? Personally I have no issues but know some people do.

Do you find you have to brush your tongue after eating or drinking tea?

  • Hi most days I'm fine with duraphat. If I have an ulcer pop up I change to Ora nurse which I buy from Amazon. No I have no issues never have had to brush tongue at any time.
i am 4 years post radiotherapy now.

  • Hi Emma

i just came across your post and wondered if you or anyone on this thread had any advice. My husband is starting 6 weeks of radiotherapy with weekly chemo on Monday. We know it's going to be a tough road and he's only 42. He's has hpv positive cancer base of tongue. Any advice on how I can support or tips for him would be really appreciated. We also have a 5 year old who is struggling with it, so as I say any insights massively appreciated.

The blogs here have been fantastic to read.

    Love to all xx

  • Hi Emma this us Hazek aka Radioactiveraz best advise taje utvone day at a time don't look too far in advance stick with us in here. Take heart that h p v derived tumours respond reslky well ti treatment s sucess rate  hovering around 95 % can't get much better than that. The first 10 or so sessions your  hubby if he's lucky won't  be too bad. We only told our 7 year old grandson that I had a sore throat didn't need ti scare him so he knew I would struggle ti eat and when my n g tube was fitted he helped his grandad to fix my feeds. Delegate take help  from everyone that offers it not a time ti be independent. Tell your sons schoool that hys daddy will ge poorly   Plus keep off google. Don't crowd  your hubby there's nothing worse than being asked every 5 mins how are you. Be there for him make sure ge gas hys medication and keeps  hydrated. Once treatment is finished remember it's continues to work For up to a month so it's not over when treatment finishes in many ways it s the start as well

Hus age ys a plus point I was 61 when diagnosed. Tiday we're over in soain and I've just cycled 60 km in 30 degree hear not bad for a nearkgv66 year old female.
He can do this it's a marathon not a sprint remember that. Any help just shout out. Plus jerp iff Dr Google information on there us mostly incorrect unless you reakky kniw where to look

  • Update.

now into week 6 post radiotherapy. Still ok with eating most things now, except spicy foods - they burn my mouth and throat. Buttered  wholemeal toast with marmalade tastes nice, but once chewing, turns to consistency of wallpaper paste !

Last week was doing really well, that I  started reducing  codeine pain medication., whilst maintaining soluble paracetamol. .And reducing number of mouthwashes. However start of this week, throat is sore and I find my mouth is almost constantly dry. Wondering if I've been too hasty

in reducing meds. Is 6 weeks post treatment considered  to be early days ?

  • Hi Liam I woujd say yes took me 7 weeks to slowly reduce the pain killers. There's nothing wrong with going back on them. I did if my slowly xtsngibg every 3 days one Tablet at a time eg 30 mg to 15 mg one tablet at a time thrn 7 mg then paracetamol . I still use bioxtra mouthwash even now. Some foods may not come bsck ti you be prepared for that for me I can't do spicy or curry's. Remember the treatment us brutal it destroys our mucosal linings if melted my uvula the dangly bit at back if thrust so there's bound to get lasting damage. Just don't try to fight it please start painkillers again. Dryness can be  a permanent side effect I still wake up with dry mouth even though I use xyimelts. Read my blog fir sn indication.

  • Thanks for your reply Hazel, much appreciated. I'm realising that good days can readily be followed by not so good days. One just has to realise it is going to take time.As you say the radical radiotherapy treatment is severe and will cause side effects, some brutal and long lasting. And recognise that every individual's experience is different.

  • Hi Liam. Yiure welcome yes 2 steps forward ine step. Back is a popular mantra that we all have faced. It's really early days for yiu although it may it seem it. 12 weeks them 6 month usually mark an improvement in manynif us. Often supplemented with late onset radiation fatigue thus is a great article to read

  • Hi yes a poignant piece. I printed copies off  for friends and family. We may look well but it's the bits you can't see. I still occasionally re read it. Glad it helped.
