Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Chrissy live heard of one or 2 in similar position they've had the area stretched ? Hope he can still manage to eat albeit soft foods for now. Sometimes our cancer just keeps on giving am sure he's in good hands. Did he do swallow exercises all the way through treatment they aren't easy to do when weee being battered from all sides Please let me know what consultants say , Thet can do an oesophageal dilation part if being sedated endoscopy I've never had one so can't comment

  • Gullet tightened and other problems, that wasn't gone into. Yes stretching was mentioned by SaLT. But have to wait for docs.

He's still being peg fed. Nil by mouth. Only sips of water. He's now been told to stop doing the exercises.

  • Hi Chrissy, I hope they get your husband sorted im at the same stage 5 months post treatment, swallowing is ok but taste and especially dry mouth not good, ive now in the last week got a slight swelling at the front of my throat, will have to keep an eye on it , and crackling in my ear, you may get the all clear, but the journey is far from over.

  • I got the gel yesterday and took before I went to bed and had a decent night's sleep. Pain has subsided - it was mostly the dry mouth over night which was painful in the morning.

I bought a nebuliser and humidifier so hopefully they will help. Another thing I bought which has worked for the last few nights is a  backpack with a water bladder normally used for running/cycling. Makes a difference not having to get up and drink from a glass when there is a tube next to me I can sip on without seemingly waking myself up so much.

Saw the speech therapist and dietitian today who said although the throat looks really sore, I am still swallowing well and have flexibility in my jaw so they were very happy with my progress which was a bit of a boost. Day 16 today so into the 2nd half and although it was a bit of a struggle to eat at the w/e, I seem to have got into a rhythm and continuing to eat solids although taste buds shot to pieces - licked some honey off a spoon after putting in some tea and it was so sour

We discussed additional pain options so at least I know what I can get when and if needed (as per above posts... patches etc).

Sorry to hear of some of your struggles, guess I have those delights still to come.

  • Yes you are right the journey is far from over!
Great to hear you are doing well. Think maybe some symptoms will stay for a while!!
Hubby had lymphoedema swelling in his face that has now gone

    Thsnks Bushy x

  • Hi Bushky. Yes sometimes it's the cancer that keeps in giving we can get ongoing issues for a good while. My latest ent scope o Tuesday showed my vocal cord cyst is still there. It's in the file of vocal cord caused by yes the dreaded dry mouth. It's harmless it doesn't cause me any issues it's just a little known side effect. I've also got a touch  of late onset fibrosis  back of neck so just all be aware I can control it by stopping what I'm doin. For me it's chopping bpveg just the angle of arm and neck. So another job for John. Seriously we do get treated and cured but the side effects can keep coming so please be aware , I also have burning tongue again manage it by avoiding trigger foods cheese tomatoes acid and citric. If I really want a cheese and tomato sandwich inhave it just aware that's I may pay the price later. Eg today I've an ulcer but the cheese sandwich was worth it. Lol

Also guys watch out for silent reflux it can feel like a lump in throat or again a need to constantly clear throat.  PPI from  gp eg omaprozole can help so another  tablet.
    hugs ti all Hazel xx
