Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Hazel hope you're well, my appointment on the 23rd got cancelled as consultant had covid, but he did give me a telephone call just to say I told him about the Xylimelts and how good they're, he'd never heard of them he's wrote the name down and is going to look into them, I'm having feeding tube taken out next week, taste is improving very slightly but saliva isn't, fatigue is getting better but still have an occasional nap in afternoon, ive got pet scan end of March and results a week later, he's very hopeful tumour will be gone, but until I get results back I'm not going to get carried away.

  • Hi. I am very well thank you. Yes the xyimelts are giid sadly n i c e the medical regulator won't approve them for prescription usage. More the pity's . Am sure  all will be ok with your pet ct scan. Occasionally hot  spots from radiotherapy do tribes still show up just warning you. If that's the case t he consult either biopsies or re scans at 3 month. Just remember is highly unlikely that treatment fails. Look forward to hearing how you get on. Hazel x

  • Hi all, not posted in a while but have a tip to contribute ( 3 years post treatment  last week ).

Tip is " toastybags"! Wish I'd known about them past few years  . I now THOROUGHLY  enjoy a tuna toastie, or any toastie really, thanks to these. No way I could before. Living abroad I'd not paid them any attention.

Pop bread in, put in toaster BUT only toast one side. Insides are very moist, I put wholeseed mustard on instead of butter, ( not a good idea in early days, use butter!)  add any filling. Eat them open. Game changer,  not a problem swallowing and really enjoyable after a long absence plus valuable calories I could have used before.

Everyone will have  different  success levels depending on saliva so very small bites. Good luck all.

  • Hi Graeme. Great tip. Forgot all about those we bought a toastier maker deffo a game changer. Well done on mustard I'm not too good with it even after 3.5 years   Just shows kije yiu say. We're over in sosin betn here 10 days both Jihn n I tested positive on Wednesday csn yiu believe it. We had slight sniffles was meeting up with a 80 years old tested and the red line appeared. We're fine throats a bit tender but nothing compared to radiotherapy. Stay safe and well done in 3 years.
    Hugs Hazel xx

  • Hello ... hope you all doing well... was wondering if anyone still gets ulcers more than 6 mths out of radiotherapy? I have 2 ... one on tonsil bed and one inside mouth ...I'm a little concerned but I guess it could still be radiotherapy damage ? I'm 8 months out now and apart from fatigue been doing ok ..

  • Hi Kat

I had a little trouble with mouth but more oral thrush rather than ulcers I would say and was presribed some cream/ointment. I dont remember timelines on when tho.

If persists phone GP and they should be able to presribe something to help

Good to hear you are doing so well and fatigue normal.

    regards

  • Hello everyone. I just wanted to update you on my partner after all your kind support. The oncologist called us with the results from his final post treatment PET scan yesterday - and it's a 'total response to treatment, no evidence of cancer found'!!!!! Obviously nothing's ever 100% certain as you learn when you join the club, but it's as good as we'll ever get! It hasn't really sunk in yet - we're both rather shell-shocked!

Thank you all so much for your support and wisdom throughout this hideous affair - it's meant such a lot to both of us. I hope that I can be as helpful to others going through it as you have been to me. X

  • Hi brilliant news. Yes it's a strange alien feeling remember Jihn and i drove home in silence   It was a case if ok ehst now. Onwards and upwards reslky happy to hear if another successful treatment. Hugs to. Both of you xHazel cc
