Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Ps yes usually chemo starts thrn after the infusion it's down to radiotherapy for the first blast. Your mask may ferl tight on that occasion it's due to all the saline pumped into you

  • Thankyou hazel im not Claustrophobic but the mask was an awful experience so i will keep that in mind Angie x

  • Hi Angie it's all a new experience   A good tip  I did was lie on my bed at home and  stay  still but let my mjbd go on a favourite bike ride or walk set time for 12 mjns that's usually the longest you're on the table.  I also took my own  c d s in as they let you play music. It helped me plus yoga breathing breath in hold for count if 7 slowly breath out. There's nothing to be scared off you'll get there we all do. Remember our third id cancer are highly curable. Look at me.

  • That's brilliant news that you're booked in to start chemo and radiotherapy so soon Angie. And great that you didn't need any teeth removed. Yes my partner's mask was really tight too, but it gets easier as you wear it everyday. He wasn't allowed to play his own music unfortunately (lucky you Hazel!) so usually got 3-4 disco classics blasted as he went in for radiotherapy!

With covid, it's harder to speak to people during chemotherapy (all masked up and separated) and you can't have visitors so my partner found it useful to take lots of activities (crosswords, novels, downloaded podcasts etc) and some nice snacks and drinks to treat himself.

Enjoy your break as much as you can before treatment starts. This treatment is incredibly effective - a gold standard treatment as our oncologist keeps telling us! I second Hazel's brilliant advice about meditation - really helps when thoughts start swirling. We use the free Insight Timer app. We're all here for you x

  • Hi So pleased I helped. Shame disco music it was great I could take c d s in even better I gifted them ti the radiotherapy suite afterwards.

  • Hi Angie,

I was diagnosed with Throat Cancer in October. Two surgeries later and I'm now doing OK. I had my mask made last week and it went well although I found it difficult to swallow while the mask was on which I wasn't expecting! I'm hoping this will get easier after the first couple of sessions. I start Radiotherapy on 21st Dec and I'm quite apprehensive to say the least. X
