Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Chris yes definitely increase his fluids  I was in minimum 2-3 litres a day as hard as it was by end of treatment hus body will be awash with radiation snd it has to slowly leach out. The recovery period can be as arduous if not more than treatment. Just take  each day as it comes there's no quick fix.I'm 3 years post radiotherapy for tonsil cancer with several affected lymph nodes. Happily living life tk the max. Any questions please ask.

  • Hi Chris

Just popped on to concur with Hazel and to say hang in there. My hubby is 5 years post SCC tonsil with lymph node tumours and has now been discharged cancer free after 5 cycles of Cistplatin, 6 weeks of radiotherapy and a neck dissection. Its a tough long road but its worth it.

    All the best

    Emma

  • Hi Emma. Thank you. Congratulations on your husbands recovery Chris XX
  • Hi Hazel

Thank you for the advice I will def increase fluids.

I'm lucky enough to be able to have time off work until the new year which it so good as he's so tired the travelling to hospital takes it out of him too 40 mile round trip daily!

  • HivChris yes I had a similar journey some days we coujd do it in 45 mins others it took 90. Just take it each day at a time. Keep him hydrated and I was advised to aim for 2500 caloya day so I had 6 ensures a day 1800 calories snd soft foods to try to supplement it.

  • Thanks for all your posts. As you say there's no quick way around this. Im trying to eat roast dinners and all sorts it's just not working im gona have to change my foods. And wait for my body to tell me when it's time to eat harder foods. Week 8 post recovery starts tomorrow. I'm back at work on the tools tho which is good can't beat the fresh air. Eating loads porridge. And still drinking 4/6 fortisep shakes a day

  • Hi big drez. Great you're back at work well done. Yes roast dinners are probably a step  too far. Poached eggs are good easy protein. It's a case of little and iften some days I had 6 smaller plates. Keep off chicken it's a hard one fish is fairly easy. Mash hard bread will be difficult. Home made Soups  custards trifles  . It's trial snd error one week I coujd eat something tried it a week later no wat. When I started again with meat I found lamb easy but shoulder cooked in slow cooker. Then chicken thighs and legs breast is still difficult. You'll get there we all do just takes time

  • Wow. Great that you're back at work. But of normality for you. Roast dinners! Good try. Slowly but surely you'll get there.

I'm a single mum and don't want to be lying around feeling sorry for myself thanks Angie

  • Hi there Angie,

I'm so sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis, but I'm very pleased to hear it hasn't spread anywhere else. You are so welcome here. My partner is now 4 weeks out of treatment. He had 7 weeks of chemoradiotherapy for tonsil cancer. It's still very much an emotional rollercoaster, but I definitely found the pre-treatment wait the worst. It got easier when treatment started and we were moving forward. This forum has been incredibly helpful - offering me practical and emotional support when I needed it the most. If you haven't already checked out the blogs by Radioactive Raz and Ian - in comments above - please do as they are super useful.

Everyone copes with treatment differently. My partner found radiotherapy ok, but the chemo really knocked him for six! Treatment was a full time job - daily hospital trips with so much waiting around, managing medications, mouth excerises, power naps, tube feeds etc. The hardest - and most important - thing was keeping spirits up. Doing this all during covid is really isolating, so please ask for help from friends and family. Let them know practical things they can do (child minding, food shops, cooking, cleaning etc)

It is a tough treatment, but (and this is a HUGE BUT!) it does end sooner than you think. My partner is slowly starting to feel like himself again. Little steps forward feel absolutely amazing - he could taste coffee again last week, walks on the beach and a cheese sandwich this week! You will get there!

Please do ask us any specific questions you have as you go through treatment - there is a wealth of knowledge and experience on this forum to help you. My best practical tip is - MooGoo cream from Holland and Barrett. Our medical team are amazed at how well his skin has recovered after slathering this on every night!

    Much strength and support, Bronwen
