Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Post week 3 now still spitting lots of mucus up and got a really salty taste in my mouth like sea water. Also no taste at all struggling to eat soup because of it   Please end.  Any ideas when and how to get rid of this salt. Can't even taste chewing gums

  • Hi you are on course week 3 was salty for me that's ar fir the course. Week 6 usually  you turn a corner by week 12 a bit more normal return. Try home made soup that way you control the seasoning kerp  away ftom tomatoes it does get better just takes tone. Hazel xx

  • Hi there

I think the mucus got better for me about week 5 idont know if this helped but I stopped taking the pain relief  about the same time.good luck

  • mantra is all about drinking as much water as you can even if small sips frequently

Would make the mucas go away as well all suffered this unpleasant side effect but water helped me as far as Im concerned. Might help break mucus up a bit, keeps you hydrated and uses your throat muscles.

As previous post, it does go away and doesnt last too long in the big scheme of things.

I knowit's unpleasant but try and stay upbeat as its part of the journey towards the light at the end of the tunnel and its all perfectly normal at your stage.

    regards

  • What about taste. I can't seem to eat it's all tastes rubbish so I'm still using milkshakes through the peg. P

  • I finished treatment middle November  last year I'm eating things now that I wouldn't have eaten before my taste seems to have changed

  • Hi the treatment  does change your taste Iv gone off red meat, not such a bad thing really.

  • My partner's having the same issue - he's in week 6 now. Everything started tasting disgustingly metallic for him in week 3. After speaking with the dietician he's recently moved up to 5 Ensure shakes through his RIG tube a day, supplemented by 2 snacks to keep his jaw/swallowing action working and to get his calorie count up. He's found that it's easiest to have really bland things that he normally wouldn't eat - custard, rice pudding, porridge, Weetabix and full fat yoghurt are his new friends! It's so far from our usual diet of Mediterranean/Indian food, but we're hopeful he can work towards that slowly after recovering.

  • Hi fir me the mantra food  is fuel got me  through the first 6 months. It was a case if getting my head around the fact that itcwss eat to live rather than live to eat. Tiday is hubby's birthday we've just been out for a meal. I am 3 years post radiotherapy you get used to knowing what you can and can't eat . For  me spicy food is a no no for some they can eat it. I can't die just work around me. Taste does come back but slowly it's one of the many things we aren't really told. I was given at target  of 2500 calories each and every day to include 85 g of protein for the first few months I orally had 6 ensures which gave me 1800 calories and left me free to make up the balance. Plus I sipped 2 litres of water minimum.  Our bodies take a battering and recovery isn't a thjng we can rush.
plus point I've cycled 900 km these last few weeks over in Spain  life does get better.
