Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Sorry hazel ment week 5. Also added some more to my post lol

  • Hi it is hard and these next few weeks it doesn't get any easier. No use saying it does .  But keep up the calories by whatever means you can. My mantra was food is fuel if  you can get your head round that and forget  about any pleasure from it you'll get there quicker. 6 weeks post treatment you turn a corner by 12 weeks another corner. You need to remember the treatment continues to work once you've had your last session your body's at a peak of chemo and radiation it then slowly leeches out if yiu hence food is fuel mantra.
    good  luck week 5

  • Week 5 nearly over 6 days left yay.  Does Anybody no How many weeks it takes until can taste food again. I'm hoping to I will be able to eat my Xmas dinner and taste it ????

  • Hi well done. I finished treatment  31 august and mansged a small Christmas dinner and tasted it. We are all different the best way I  found was to treat food as fuel forget any pleasure for a while  Use your food  supplement sas your main calorie intake and gradually increase food as you can

    good Luck Hazel

  • Week 6. And skin on throat is completely burnt so painful. Constantly spitting up mucus. Can hardly sip water. This is worse it's been by far now not nice at all. Good luck to thos going through this

  • Thats how I was at the end of the treatment and stayed that way for a good few weeks after, we are all a bit different but it slowly gets better, the E45 cream I was precribed for the skin on my neck actually kept the wound slightly open and didnt start to heal until I stopped using it. End of treatment was the worst time but keep going things will improve.

  • Hi. Remember once treatment finished your skin won't burn anymore ask fir polymem bandages or flamazine cream. Once you've finished internally the treatment keeps working fir several more weeks. So prepare to hunker down I slept a lot but kerp kn too if hydration and nutrition yiu need both to help recover. It's not easy but it's worth it.
    good luck Hazel

  • Hi, the mucus thing is a positive, but horrible side effect, it does pass, but not nice to go through. If not  for the guys on this page i would have not known about it, so no need to stress, perfectly normal after so much radiation.

Hazel rightly says rest, hydration and nutrition, anyway you can, i had porrridge twice a day, yoghurt, full fat, ice cream too, and eggs, any type fried or scrambled. If you are on the feeding  tube then you can get   right on to this type of nutrition  soon as you are able, after removal,  as it is vital.  Best wishes, Graeme.

PS,  As for the burns, we all have varying degrees, i got a cream called Radiocare, expensive but really worked.

  • Hi thanks for reply. I can eat nothing I'm having high does on throat so food is a no no. I can manage the odd sip of water. I'm getting off my nutrition through my peg tube 6 shakes a day
