Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Cheers Ian and thanks for replying.

I am only as good as my last review now. I got over confident, then had the blip.  So lesson learnt! Haha.

stay well, stay safe, stay sane...

  • Hi Lori

Thank you again for your very informative reply. This is only week 1 post treatment. The docs did warn me it would be hell  and they were so right. I'm struggling to swallow anything and pain in throat seems to get worse not better. Good to know there is an end in sight. Thank goodness for morphine. Even taken with a syringe into my mouth it burns my throat.

i can't wait until this recuperation time is over. I'm really miserable. Everything from the neck up hurts!

    I wish you well

    Karen

  • Hiya Hazel, mentor, all round good egg. Xx

the hotel what! ! !  The cheek of it and I am so glad that you got that sorted out.  I guess that quarantine won't really affect you and If I wasn't working, I think that I would go abroad.

6 o'clock at night, well that's better, we will get more time for a catch up.

I think that I have developed blockage in saliva channels on one side ( fingers crossed it's nothing nasty). So when I have my first meal of the day my neck and cheek blow up on one side.  At this stage I am not complaining, I can cope with blocked saliva over no saliva.. haha

I am busy compiling my questions for the end of August consultant review....and the consultant said it would be business as usual this time, I did tell him that he'd be lucky... anyway I'm expecting the camera down the throat this time.

I hope that you get to see someone soon. My hospital is still running the old appointment scheme, thank goodness.

    sees you soon(ish) xx

  • Hi Karen

I hope that this helps! I didn't say anything before but about midway through the second week of post recovery, I did actually start to feel a tad better and things were definitely changing in my mouth.  This was only a few days after I probably hit rock bottom, I had to be driven to get some meds and I couldn't even walk into the pharmacy unaided. That was a really bad day, yet on,y a few days later I realised that I did actually feel a bit better.

I hope that you are very near that first day of realising that you are really on the road to recovery.

I seem to recall that I mixed my morphine with water, but please check first, I might have made that up, also the hospital gave me some sort of liquid ( sort of gaviscon texture), which had a mild painkiller in it. So I used to slosh this around my mouth first and then do the meds, followed by mouth cleaning.

are you on pain patches a well?  Sorry I can't remember

    lori
