Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Dave

from 41 degree Spain so yes the factor 50 is out n bikes only in a morning.

My oncologist explained to me that at the moment coz us over 24ish in U.K. wasn’t vaccinated as it wasn’t around. On average at anyone time 84% of the world population has the h p  v 16/18 virus inside us under normal circumstances our bodies get rid of it within a 2 year period a very very small percentage ie us on here had an event in our life  during infectious time in my case we think we isolated it to s bad dose of Aussie flu December 2017 when for a nano second my immune system dropped and in popped the virus . Back in 2003 I had a mis diagnosed case of tonsillitis yep 46 year old never had any trouble but turned into Quinces which had to be lanced twice consultations atvtime said my right tonsil would always be weak spot.

Fasrxforward March 2018 when I first noticed swelling in whst we know know lymph node holding the dead cancer cells. So it was a lining up of lots of things in my case that happened and wham bam here we are today.

How I got the h p v will always be a mystery suffice to say John won’t be getting any more special birthday pressies. Hold that thought  everyone lol

    too much info.

H so my suggestion live our life’s we deserve to just be careful what you kiss in future lol xx

PURPOSETo better understand oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cancer risk among long-term sexual partners of patients with HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer (HPV-OPC).

PATIENTS AND METHODSAn oral rinse sample, risk factor survey, cancer history, and oral examination (partners only) were collected from patients with HPV-OPC and their partners. Oral rinse samples were evaluated for 36 types of HPV DNA using PGMY 09/11 primers and line-blot hybridization and HPV16 copy number using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Oral HPV prevalence was compared with infection among those age 45 to 65 years using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2010.

RESULTSA total of 164 patients with HPV-OPC and 93 of their partners were enrolled. Patients were primarily men (90%), were never-smokers (51%), and had performed oral sex (97%), with a median age of 56 years; they had a high prevalence of oncogenic oral HPV DNA (61%) and oral HPV16 DNA (54%) at enrollment. Female partners had comparable oncogenic oral HPV prevalence compared with members of the general population of the same age (1.2% v 1.3%). Among the six male partners, no oncogenic oral HPV infections were detected. No precancers or cancers were identified during partner oral cancer screening examinations. However, a history of cervical disease was reported by nine partners (10.3%) and two female patients (11.8%), and three patients (2.0%) reported a previous partner who developed invasive cervical cancer.

CONCLUSIONOral HPV16 DNA is commonly detected among patients with HPV-OPC at diagnosis, but not among their partners. Partners of patients with HPV-OPC do not seem to have elevated oral HPV infection compared with the general population.

Just read this-if anyone interested x

  • Hi Hazel John will have to make do with a slice of cake from now on lol, 41 degrees wow we are fine with 30 here in Greece thanks,

I mainly go on the nhs leaflets I got when first diagnosed and from those we could have had the virus as long as 30-40 yrs so will be impossible to know where it came from in most cases.

Although fit and healthy all my life I always had sinus and throat issues if I got a cold it could take a while to clear from my throat, I even called it my Achilles heel so for me it’s been my weak area, I had my tonsils removed aged 4

My Oncologist told me the virus causes cell production to go wrong and it starts from there.

Its confusing because we’ve all been told different things.

  • Hi Dave

cake he should be so lucky seeing as he gave me my pressie of h p v 16;+ he can go and play with himself !! Only joking we  do laugh about it as there is no other way. Somethings if I am in kitchen prattling around next he will slide uo and whisper any chance of a quickie you can say NO umm let me think about it ??? Yep your are right no.   But normal sexual relationships are ok can’t depeive the boy all together !!!!Then laugh .weve been together since John was 15 and me 17 So yep, sweet and innocent, we even bought our bungalow a full 18  months before   we were married and both lived at home bungalow was empty. Sweet or sad. Lol.

But yep I could have also has the virus or John from birth as the alternative scenario was it can transfer from mother to child, my oncologist asked family history in relation to other herpes virus and on Johns side very prelevant was shingles and cold sores his mum grandmother maternal and all his mums sisters plus Jihn ans his sister so that raised eyebrows but who knows. it isn’t dormost in my mins has it got rid if it don’t intend  getting it again ! Will gladly help others to go through ut. Like my drs says hopefully it will be greatly reduced with introducing the vaccine for teenage boys but until it’s a world wide vaccine it’s an uphill struggle.

enjoyb30 degrees we’ve thus temp  little while longer but treating this trip like a holiday as opposed to a living here trip.

    H love to Julie.

  • Thanks for posting that Other Half - interesting reading, even if it doesn't offer any answers or explanations.  I guess the things to take from it are (a) try not to worry about the HPV side of things going forward, and (b) female partners should make a point of going to cervical screening appointments (but then, so should the rest of the female population).

  • Oh yes-totally, & no- no particular answers -which seems to be the case with it all. It was just regarding having to use protection during intercourse, I will ask the question-someone must know-anyway won't bang on about it, but will post any relevant info if I find any.

Hazel & Dave-enjoy your holidays you lucky people-you deserve it-relax, enjoy & enjoy some more xxx

  • Hi Hazel, Hope youre well and enjoying your holz? Just a quick question-(if thats ok?) what is the gum you mentioned to help with saliva? looked through posts but can't see a mention of it..? xxxx

  • Hi yep still in Spain until next week a tad too hot at 37 degrees but plenty if water and slapping factor 50 on sitting in shade and swimming in sea but I’d bike riding early in the morning g. Home next week. The chewing gum is sugar free never get anything else and you are looking for ones with xylitol in them word of warning dogs can have severe reactions to xylitol .

holland and  Barrett do one that is called pepper smith always look for xylitol being the main ingredient any that have sorbitol as main ingredient avoid as it’s an artificial ingredient xylitol is a natural ingredient. I tend to bring mine back from Spain as the main supermarkets here sell it but at home it’s trial and eeeoe yiu can also get it on amazon. I also use at night 1/2 a xymelts tablet to keep saliva going I get this online from the mouth ulcer company 40 which hubby breaks in half for me so I get 80 nights for about £8 they stick to your gum and slowly dissolve they also help, protect against cavities I getbthe plain ones as mint one s I found too strong in night

    how’s everything going
