Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer

Hello all,

I have posted my little story on introduce yourself and basically I have been diagnosed with Stage 1 Throat cancer.

The prognosis is hopeful and I remain cheerful and positive. Its taken a while for the actual treatment to start so glad to get on with it at last.

I started my first day of radiotherpy today and have 29 more treatments to go over 6 week period.
I have made a little computer programme that logs my side effects and summarises episodes of each heading and I plan on keeping a daily log of how things went/ how I feel ( good and bad ) and map out my journey. I find it therapuetic.

I will share periodically in the hope that even if it helps one person as well as myself  it will be worthwhile.

So day 1 was fine and I dont really feel any difference or notice anything.
One small point is that the mask made was slightly harder than when it was first made as it has set little harder over the weeks and was a little more moveable on the day made.
Took about 10 mins for actual radiotherpay treatment itself.
Drove home fine.

Meet with advanced practioner nurse every Thurs to discuss progress.
Aware might be a little different along the way but all good after day 1.

kind regards

Ian

  • Hi Hazel.

I'm right with you on that one re keeping some sense of humour in all this or it would drive you nuts.

There is a lot to contend with but I've found that with a little humor and staying as positive as can be really helpful.
Of course been times when feeling rough but just grind on, smile and I kept knowing I was heading towards my light at the end of my tunnel.

  • Guess the prize for 1000th post was a spellchecker ! :D:D:D:D     well, you did say humour!

  • lol at both

how very apt graeme...I'm thinking Hazels spelling was attention seeking though.

and yes hazel we do keep other amused and sane ( as can be ) all times of day and night.

    All

I never thought for a minute when I started this thread last year it would take off and mushroom into 1000 posts with so many contributing and supporting one another and its been such a helpful thread and like a little community spirit that has fostered.

On the humor side, yes i know this is a serious topic and serious treatment and recovery and majority of time it has been serious and genuine help and support for one another. The occasional humour, banter and even nicknames does help lighten the mood sometimes and I persoanly think it has a place to promote positive thinking to help overcome this horrid diagnosis we faced.

So a toast and a glass of diet coke to you all ( oh and 12 pints of beer for SuperDave )  :

    Cheers

    Onwards & Upwards

    Ian

  • Well done on the 1000th post Hazel very fitting lol and keep the sense of humour coming it’s needed even in the bad times and proof that we can beat this, loving Greece very warm today but I can take the heat better since having radio...Not sure why though? I was scrolling Facebook today and an ad came up it was Mark Radcliffe who is getting over it, he’s the radio DJ fronting an HPV throat cancer awareness campaign plus some other celebs, apparently the North West of England is one of the worst affected areas 1100 new cases each year 75% men, maybe this is acceptance that there’s an epidemic at last?

  • H Graeme took me 2 hours to type that post ! Glad I’ve at last got the recognition I deserve !

    lol

  • Hi Ian

Diet Coke slapped wrists haven’t you read a word of my previous posts on this thread !! No coke of any deception coke zero Diet Coke coke. Pepsi naughty ! Crisps and coke and Buzz  Lightyear suppose popcorn next!

But yes agree with you on all points  we’ve all made valuable contributions and hopefully will, continue to do so.

    Super Dave

weve seen the sun over in West Yorkshire as well albeit briefly.

re Mark Radcliffe I remember hearing bin radio that he had Throat cancer just before Christmas and was taking a sabbatical from presenting did wonder atbthe rime if h p v 16+ was involved, interesting fact that nw England  and I know Scotland has an high incidence , even more interesting is stats that female  now gone uo to 25% female. It makes you wonder what’s the trigger suppose we are the generation that s supposed to have has it all LOL well we are  now  ertainky getting our fair share of this ! If you see any articles let me know.

In the meanwhile enjoy the beer ouzo and moussaka, impressed that you can tolerate the heat better wonder if that’s been coz we’ve been burnt internally with the radiation. My ent consultant the ithervweeks looked at my tonsil area and said ummmm yours remaining tonsil has melted away !! Has I didn’t have a tonsillectomy ! Just shows what radiotherapy does !
